Grown men weeping, wailing, gnashing their teeth, sending flame mail to Baldy....

Terrorism? Security? Computer crashes? No. Penelope Cruz. Anna Kournikova. Thoroughly digusting images of....you don't even want to know what some people have posted here.

Some ADVriders want nudie pics — and passionately. Some leave ADVrider in disgust because of them and never return, flaming me on the way out. It's the hottest recurring theme on the board.

ADVrider is incredibly open to free speech and has but one strictly enforced rule: no porn, no nudity. If she's topless, fuhgeddaboudit.

    Q: But...but...but...Baldy! Hello?! Why?!
A: (1) Porn gets expensive fast; (2) Half our members want the site safe for surfing at work or among their families; (3) We learned in a hurry that any wiggle room in the nudity rulz meant incredibly foul and sometimes illegal pics appeared.

    Q: Be specific. What's porn? A thin T-shirt? A camel toe?
    A: Nudity. If it's see-thru enough, it's gone.

Q: Okay, fine, you old prude. So the worst that can happen is my post gets deleted if you find it?
B: Life's too short for me to spend it as the porn police, so the easiest thing for me to do is flip a bit so you can't access Jo Momma or the other forums.

Now go post incredibly erotic pics of naked bikes so we can all lust after them.

this summer I had to do some serious dancing at a client's office to save the job of an employee. He has a permanent assignment in this company's facility to maintain a piece of equipment. He has a company owned laptop and we maintain an Intranet site to share info company wide. This yahoo however spends slack time surfing the net. He wound up receiving some stuff in his mail and opened it. The photos were explicit stuff and unbeknownst to him the shift supervisor was looking for him and picked that moment to show up behind him.

I think it is important to be able to trust the sites you visit not to surprise you. So way to go Baldy:clap

Interesting. I work in the tech segment and have had to deal with this issue both from an employee and a management standpoint. The truth of the matter is that frequently, the requirements of the job force employees to work hours far in excess of that holy grail; the forty hour work. That said, management realizes that employees will visit various web sites and conduct occasional personal activities from time-to-time during the course of the work day. It is when the individual productivity level starts to become impacted due to abuse of this implied consent that trouble arises. Exactly where the line is is a judgement call for a reasonable person. This is just one of the many roles of a good manager.

Certain companies prefer to take the lazy way out and forbid any and all non-business related internet access (or personal phone calls, etc.). However, this is a short-sighted approach - the reality is that the large majority of employees will achieve a balance, while a small minority will abuse the privilege. No tolerance rules fly in the face of common sense and good judgement, and eventually will drive otherwise good employees into the arms of other companies...perhaps even the competition.

The bottom line - it's all about judgement and common sense. The good supervisor would know how productive the individual employee is, how many hours he/she puts in (including on-call time), and makes the appropriate call. The bad supervisor? She's unfamiliar with what the hell's going on and overwhelmed by events and responds with knee-jerk reaction (much like our liberal friends) to situations without thinking.

I'm a little worried that a newlywed, on his first Christmas with his new bride, is thinking about hamsters wrapped in duct tape. :eyes2

Baldy, you run a good site. As a newbie I found it great reading and good for info. Seems like a good group of guys as well. Plenty of porn elsewhere if ya want it. I like this this place for the motorsicles.

Given the current and future job market, I now make it a rule not to do any non-business surfing or even emailing at any future workplaces. Workplaces may tolerate it, but it is just safer not to engage in it at all.

Once, some years back, when we were going to war with Iraq, I was in a training room and while waiting for the instructor I went to www.fox.com thinking this was the Fox network's site and that I could go to their new site from there. It turned out to be a porn site.

Anyway, I think havin a no porn rule here is quite reasonable; if you want porn there is certainly a lot of it out there on the 'net, much of it free. Keeping this website and forum free of it makes it a lot easier for the people running and paying for it. A lot of hosts require that website owners guarantee no porn on their sites, and those that allow it charge more for the priviledge. It is sad that erotica is equated with offensive scandal and even crime, but that is life in the prudish USA.
