Hi all just checking on where you carry your spot tracker, tried mine for the first time on the weekend attached to the sleave of my jacket now it moved around a lot and was not facing up like it's meant to. now I've read all about the pro's and con's about mounting on the bike or the person but I cant figure a place that's safe and sky facing to mount it on my jacket as I don't wear a back pack, so need some input for out there. or I just buy a ram mount and attach it to the bars
Hey R&R Just looking at the same myself. I think the Ram mount is the way to go. I see your from Ipswich as well. Regards
yeah mate still in the SWITCH think i'll have a go at the ram mount also, just don't like the idea of it attached to my arm.
I run mine on the camelback/backpack strap also, high on the shoulder to get maximum skyward facing signal. Ran it on my bars on one trip and had a minor getoff that resulted in me being 10m from the bike,,, That got me thinking about the possibility of being separated from the bike, injured and not able to get to the bike for some reason ??? :huh SO back on the backpack strap on all rides now
I wear mine around my upper right arm. SPOT facing sort of forward and out so it's pointing to the sky when riding. Works OK for me and doesn't move around much. Maybe I have the strap tighter. A mate of mine has his on his right forearm. He sewed a little patch of velcro to the sleeve to mate with the velcro patch on the back of the SPOT. Its held in place by the strap but the velcro stops it moving around. Originally I had it on my left arm, but one day I forgot to turn tracking on and had to stop to do so. I couldn't take my throttle hand off long enough to turn it on. So I changed it to the other side. Before that I tried it in my camel, but that only worked travelling south... must've been a bad arrangement of satellites. It was ponting back more than up I guess. I also tried it on the should strap of my camel, but it didn't work well there either. I presumed it was too close to my helmet which must've obscured too much of the sky (not that I have a big head or anything!). Also I guess if I'm injured I probably stand a better chance of pressing a button on my arm than getting my camel off in order to do so. Al.
i use the ram since my spot2 armband got torn liked the idea of it on my person as well but anyone know where you can get a replacement for the spot2 as i cant find them anywhere to purchase
Had it on a ram mount then heard about the poor bugger in central west who came off his bike and could not make it back to his bike to push the button and was found a few days later. I have now done about 10,000k's with it on my right arm and a flexi velcro strap. Am used to it now and yes it does miss a few gps points if not pointing the right direction but my gps tracks my trip. You can also hit ok/track etc whilst on the go
On my Spot 3 it says not to place near a GPS so RAM is no good for me. Have been using straps on the tank bag as I don't like it on my jacket and hitting branches etc. Faces straight up on the tank bag.
I carry this in map pocket on left forearm (bmw rallye jacket) - most of the time it is facing up, never had problems with marking correct location. I guess if it can't see sky clearly it might drain battery a bit more, but I carry rechargeable spares. And in likely case of being separated from the bike, I hope not to be separated from my jacket
I have got my mounted on a ram mount near the GPS, never had a problem with either. I carry an epirb in my backpack if I get separated from the bike, but I reckon if anything happens the automatic tracking of the spot will let them know where to look.
i carry mine in the map sleeve in the tank bag. that way i can send a signal when i require and not have it on continuously. i had it "tracking" for about 7 hours and it ran the batteries flat so now i just turn it on and off as im riding.
I think it all depends what you want to use it for As a life support device or a tracker 1- On the bike Easy to send tracking info Not good in accident if you get separated from bike and the possibilities of the SPOT separating from bike 2-On your arm using SPOT pouch Easy to send tracking info Easy to use in an emergency BUT It can get dislodged and fly off your arm (personal experience) as you tumble uncontrollably through the grass and trees 3- In you jacket pocket on a strong lanyard tied off too a strong point of your jacket Not so easy to use as tracker BUT when you stop send the spot message then In pocket out of harms way and it should be there when you need it along with your whistle Just my 2cw
I use it on both my bikes , a strap over the handle bar mount pad on my WR and on a ram mount on my 950 , I also have a PLB which I have in a side pocket of my backpack for that separation issue mentioned before .
