I've searched this thread and can't kind the info I need, so I'll ask. I've got a 1978 r80 with points ignition. (not the bean can) this there any points from the local store interchangable with the originals? also, I read in this thread that points from china don't last. I've looked at bobsbmw site and they have the parts I need. are these quality parts?(oem) price is a little high but if they're good quality I would rather get those. thanks for any info.
The points for the early Airheads are a one off type. Much like the oil filters, low volume equals high cost. You will not find an equivalent anywhere. Bobs has a great rep with regard to knowledge for correct parts for these machines. You're on the right track. If you add the Dyna Booster, the points will last 3 or 5 times as long. Update to the Dyna III ignition and no more points at all.
thanks for the info, I figured that would be the answer. I've dealt with bobs before and their parts have always been good quality. quess I need to give them a call. as for the dyna 3 setup, that's what I had on my bike for the last 5 years until it died on me on a backroad in west virginia last week. I carried the points plate with me in case this happened so swapped it out and was on my way. it runs good with points so I'm going to stick with them going forward. thanks for the help.
I think these points are identical to VW beetles and Combi airhead flat four, maybe same as BMW 2002 cars if my remembering is OK
Hey guys, I'm just curious about something. Not gonna do it unless I hit lottery or a great job but wouldn't mind knowing a ballpark figure. What would you expect to pay for a complete engine, tranny, and drive rebuild? Specifically if I take out of the frame? My 88 R100RS (new to me) has 80k reading on the odo, but the odo is broken so who knows what's really on it. There is no record of an engine or tran rebuild, but records of everything else exist. I'm starting to pout money into replacement parts, mostly body/electrical, etc but have that tiny little fear in the back of my mind = what happens if the engine quits after I do all this, and isn't it harder/more $ to do a rebuild after a seizure than before (of course it must be).... I'm also thinking I have it slightly apart now, so now's the time to really get to the bones of the semi old airhead. It runs nice at speed, but I'm sure it's tired. TIA
80K + a bit more...no need to worry. If it blows smoke when tootling away from idle,eg at traffic lights, then maybe valve guides, otherwise it'll be fine. Get a compression or leak down test maybe? Re: transmission...change the oil as per book and inspect the magnet for sharp slithers. That's when you pull the trans. Cost depends on what you get done, but I'd expect $1K+.
thanks guys -just changed the engine oil, tranny, shaft and final drive, changed the plugs and brake pads.... gonna clean it up minor paint work, and possibly change the charging system to something modern. cheers
what are they smoking over there?? http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...akeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en
Does any body know of alternates for the 6V coils on the 1979 R100RS. This is the BMW p/n12131244142 for $120 each. Thanks
Lots of used airhead 6v coils available every week on eBay. If you get them from Beemerbone yard you can expect they meet spec ohms and will function just fine. Snobum gives the full treatise on optional coils. Likely any 6v VW coil will do the job just fine. Just verify 3 ohms rating.
There is a open hole that I think needs a 90* insert, aluminum, down facing directing for a clear hose on the right side just below the Idle set screw and I believe that I am missing this part. I believe it to be a over flow for the top half of said carb. Carb. is stock and it is a MIC. made in Japan that goes on a 1977 TT 500D Yamaha which I believe to be stock. Or can anybody lead me to a stock diagram of this carb.? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
So, when replacing 6v coils with 12v coils, do you just wire them like before or do you run 12v to each then make a "Y" in the points wire to connect to each?? 90% of replaced coils were function nominal, just easy to buy and mount. How did you prove the coil was bad?? I currently see 5+ pairs of 6v stock coils currently running on eBay for $30 or less buy it now.
