What do these bolts on the rear drive do?

I'm new to the 1200gs but I don't what these bolts do. The closest one in the picture that's all by itself and the top looks really rusted (mostly from the flash) . What is it? It has a little sleeve which is able to move up and down a little bit. Do you think I need to tighten it. The other one I'm confused about is the one near the disc brake that's all by itself. It looks like something's supposed to be attached there but nothing is. So what do they do, do they need tightening?

They hold the mud guard on that you don't have...
Rear fender sort of

on my 1150gs the bolts were for mounting the stock plastic rock deflector that kind of wraps around the back of the tire.

Oh good, that clarifies it. Maybe I'll pick one up some day but they don't seem entirely too necessary.

I do ride in the rain. So I guess I should just get one. Is it the best option or is there a better aftermarket idea? I think on my 1150 I had a huge fender that extended extra and liked that.

People behind me may wish I kept the fender thingy, but i don't miss it.

Go to Walmart or IKEA and buy a black, or color of your choice, cutting board made from nylon. Cut it to whatever size you wish, drill three holes and bolt it on. Put the plate wherever you want. Cheaper the TT, not backordered, and will never rust or get bent.

And if you're careful to not cut the bit you need out of the center, you can trim the remainder into ta nice little cutting board for when you're camping off the bike. Can't do that with a Touratech backorder slip...
