I don't know if it applies to your frame, but I coated an 84 model CR frame last week and there was a good bit of rot on the lowest part of the frame. It looks pretty similar to yours. Quite surprising here in Texas. It required welding patches over the tubes on both sides. You might poke yours thoroughly to make sure it's solid before you go any further.
Thanks Cat Daddy! I did check the frame and there is some minor denting and scrapes on the bottom but seemed ok. One of the reasons i strip a bike down in the winter is to inspect it and check everything out on the bike. If I am going to jump 80' doubles on it I have to be confident it is ok. I love to make them look good but really my restorations are about making sure the bike is safe. Metal fatigues in 23 years of use and case in point is the magnesium engine cases are failing on many of the vintage bikes, the cases on 79/80 RM 125's won't hold a main bearing for long anymore because the metal is getting soft. I really do look at each part of the bike and check it for cracks and wear then reassemble with new bearings and grease to protect and preserve for the future, I don't do a living room or Museum restoration because I know after one ride it is gonna get dirty, which is what I want! Here's my 80 RM 125 after a winter service which I have since sold,
On the soft metal subject ; have you heard of deep freezing parts? supposed to realign the molecules and harden the metal.
They cryogenically (sp?) treat parts nowadays, though I'm not sure how well it would work on something like an engine case... It seems like GM was cryo-ing con rods on the LS7 motors along with doing the cracked rod cap trick when it was introduced. It might be worth Googling
There is a company in Cali that welds a bead around the races and then machine's it out to accept the stock bearing which supposedly works well, It costs $2-300 to get done which is not alot but it's another expense. The Magnesium cases on the late 80's Hondas start to crumble where there is contact with anti freeze, it litterly falls apart in your hand. The fix is to spread JB weld over it and then grind smooth. I just found out that the 90-91 cases fit the 89 and are aluminum not mag and don't deteriate.
Found these to fill in those ugly holes in the airbox, which had been duct taped up. A little Rustoleum to finish them off, Should have that factory look when done.....
Hey Phil I sat on my phone and crushed it, Diet time I guess Anyway Im gonna finish the frame tomorrow am. Just post up or pm when you want it back by. If you want it tomorrow I'll bring it back bare. If you can wait till Monday I should be able to get it primed by then but not sure about paint
I texted you about the racing this morning, was wondering why I didn't hear back? Thought you might be in jail or something I might have time this weekend to paint so if it's done let me know and I'll pick it up????
The holes were a little rough, Look much better! Cmon! even though these pretty get much covered by the side panels there friggen cool.
Swing by my house after 11am. Supposed to be raining so walk into detached garage. I will leave the frame alongside the skid loader (left side or center of garage). They will be bare metal. If you change your mind and want them primed/painted with the cans leave them there I will try to get it back by Monday/ Would be Thurs at latest
Ahh sorry but no your not Spent another 2 hrs this am and finished up the frame. talked to the paint guy about shooting a coat of primer on it and well you know how these things progress.. anyway if the stars align. Come by my house after 9am tomorrow and you should have a finished painted frame. Worse comes to worse and he doesn't get to it Ill have it at my house at 9am with or with out paint
Drove to Springfield Mass. today and picked up the suspension so If I could just find that guy who took my frame I could start to assemble it....I'm excited!
