Congrats on a trip well ridden. We rode past each other while you were in LAX, maybe back in 2010..... Do not remember other than I saw your stickers, but the traffic was thick and could not have stopped for a chat. Too bad..... Best of luck on your future endeavors!
Congratulations on the completion of an epic journey, Jay ! Thank you for sharing this adventure with us. It's been awesome. Many of us have been following along for years now, checking in regularly from update to update. Your journey has served as inspiration for many of us to push away from the dock and start our own. Good luck on the next segment of your life's adventure. I wish you the best.
Jay, you are the man. You and your trip will always be an important part of ADVrider. You have shown us all what you are made of. The people you have met, and cooked for, the problems you have faced and overcome, the the distance you have traveled, are most impressive. You have done something that you can tell to your Grandchildren. Good for you, and thanks for taking us along.
Wow! No, didn't see that. Will have to figure out where it is. Looks nice and scary Oh yeah, probably that 7 lane stretch of freeway Thanks man. Can't believe it's over over. Still feels like just one of my 'extended' breaks... But I did register for a regular postpaid mobile number today. Oh no, no more prepaid SIM cards :huh Thank you for being there since the beginning! I'll keep this tread alive as the ride report still has a ways to go and I did promise more videos...
Thanks for those lovely words, brother I feel proud to be a part of the ADV family! My pleasure. Thanks
Thanks for an amazing read. I concur with the folks who call you a legend - I remember seeing your photos in the AMH and thinking, man, that's what I want to do. Congratulations - what's next for you? :)
June 18, 2013 Here's a feature that was published on my trip in Motor Vikatan, a Tamil monthly automotive magazine. I can't read Tamil but proud to represent the home state! Thanks to the Madras Bulls Motorcycling Club for the hook up See it bigger here: http://issuu.com/knyn/docs/motor_vikatan_-_jay_kannaiyan
I am very glad you completed the journey safely. I remember when I started on my 6 month journey from San Francisco to Argentina that your 3 year plan seemed completely nuts and something very few people are capable of. Kudos to you! So what's the plan with Sandrina? Tempted to buy a new bike at all? The new KTM 390 Dukes look amazing as does the new Royal Enfield Cafe Racer! =)
Jay, I am so glad I ran across your RR so many months ago! I can't remember exactly when I joined you. It might have been Panama...it's been a while. For me, reports like yours are what this forum is about. Your information has helped me make a number of planning decisions including choosing the DR. Thanks for the effort, we appreciate it. And to all you inmates, BUY A T-SHIRT! It's a piece of ADV history
Congratulations on finishing the trip, Jay! Also, thanks for keeping up with both this and the Yahoo India updates during your trip through India, it was great to follow along.
Have been away so just got through the India part of the trip. Followed your RR from day one and enjoyed every page. You are a great credit to the ADV community Sir! Epic! Many congratulations Jay
Thanks, man What's next? Trying not to get a real job if I can help it Have started writing the book and need to get a few chapters done before the contract is signed and I get an advance and then working on a new deal with Yahoo that should be a steady income... Hey Mike, yeah, I remember your trip and was happy to see more DRs heading into South America I've been approached by Suzuki India and they want to help with servicing sanDRina Got a free oil change so far but trying to see if they can cover more serious labor costs involving repairing my swingarm and cylinder head and going over the frame for cracks. I'm working on importing her into India. My carnet runs out on 1st August But yeah, once all that's done, don't know if I'll be riding her all around since tires and parts will be an issue, but let's see... A new friend in Delhi is trying to hook me up with an old Enfield to ride around on for a while so that I can see whether I really want one. The new Duke looks really exciting for the Indian market but I don't know, too flashy for me I heard they're coming out with an enduro version later... It makes the same power as the DR650 and it's only a 390 Hey, there's a moto travellers meet taking place near Bangalore over July 27-28. I'm going to be presenting and other bike travelers are invited. You want to come?
Cheers, man. Reading that makes me smile. I feel so honored to be a part of ADV Doing the daily updates for Yahoo India was interesting but definitely felt like a job towards the end. But I guess they were paying me, so... can't complain And big thanks to all you guys who've been there since the beginning
June 25, 2013 Got an article published in the current Adventure Motorcycle Magazine! If you're in the US, pick up a copy. If not, get a digital subscription. I wrote about my experiences with Do-Good-As-You-Go (The Muskoka Foundation) a movement I'm part of that encourages overland travelers to volunteer their skills at remote communities. In Africa, I visited an after-school organization on Ilha da Mozambique and ran a small photography workshop at an orphanage in South Africa. And now, I've got an interesting organization lined up here in Delhi...
My local Barnes & Noble are still displaying the last issue of ADV Moto (dual sport news). But it should show up soon, early July I'd guess. I believe this mag is published by-monthly? Very cool you got a write up there! It's seems to be catching on. I hope they can survive! Looking forward to reading your article. I'm assuming you'll have to export your DR out of India? Where too? Maybe Suzuki will "buy" it from you and then display it in the Suzuki Museum in Hamamatsu, Japan? Far as I know they've not enshrined any bikes of world travelers yet ... although I believe Austin Vince approached them on this subject? (Mondo Enduro, Terra Circa on DR350's)
Ack, only just saw this now. Your talk is on Saturday evening? How long are you staying? I might be able to make a weekend trip of it... The first bike I bought after returning home to California was KTM 690 which fixed the only 2 issues I had with the DR: carburation and HP
Yup, it's a bi-monthly. Looks like a good quality magazine Well, I'm planning to stay in India for a few years at least and that means I'm working on importing sanDRina into India. Not an easy task and only 1 month left on my current carnet. Let's see, I got some agents working on it... Ha, don't think Suzuki cares much about travelers and personal bikes. They're too big and focused on the things that help them sell bikes - racing. But let's see, Suzuki India has gotten in touch and they want to help out with some serious servicing and I offered to do a presentation for them... Not sure when I'll be speaking over the weekend but most likely Saturday. Here's the event notice and there's a registration form: https://www.facebook.com/events/186894454806304/ Yeah, I can imagine the 690 is a different animal to the DR. I heard KTM is thinking of bringing the 690 into India but it would have to be built here, crazy rules for manufacturers that they can't import anything smaller than an 800cc (to protect the local market, of course).
