This looks awesome! I can't wait to dig in on it. I have a 2004 with Akra mufflers. I do most of my miles between -282 and +2000 with the occasional jaunt up to 6k or so. (seems altitude flexibility would be needed) No clue what jets and needles are in it currently. (should I buy a full kit?) Its my daily commuter so I do care about economy. AND I'm planing to ride the Divide next summer. Can I do everything with one setup or should I plan to readjust for the CDT? I'm thinking about adding flexjets to this setup as well. Thoughts? Source? And.... GO! Thanks for all the great info in the thread!
Hey, Nice Product SW, I was about to order CPR's filter when I saw yours, nice! Before I do so, I was wondering if it will work with a 6 Sigma jet kit, and Lexx exhaust cans? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QZIA6E/ref=gno_cart_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A34ZGLX2KUBO21 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BG07V5A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3B0BMW3MGDK5Q Anyone has experience with those products? Why are they so inexpensive compared to other brands? Thanks!
My father always told me that carburetor is French for "leave it alone." Despite this nugget of parental wisdom, I finally got around to installing SW's filter, a Factory Pro jet kit and block off plates. My friend Mark and I tore into the top third of my motorcycle (which was running fine, I might add) and removed a bunch of doodads and hoses which Mark said I no longer needed. We swapped in 168/170 jets, the needles that came in the kit and whatever that other jet-like thingy was that came in the box. As we had no idea how to set it, we left the float height at whatever it already was. We were flummoxed however, when we discovered that the filter plate appeared to be nowhere near the right size. Perhaps Chris had shipped on for a Super Duke by mistake? There was no going back, though, so I sent off a panicked email with a photo attached showing the mis-matched part. Chris must have the notifications switched on for his email, as I got a response moments later with his phone number and a request to call. So call I did, expecting some sort of apology and a promise to send the correct part. There was humour in Chris' voice as he explained that the mounting plate should go above the carburetors, not below as we trying to do. Since we had him on the phone, I asked if clip three on the needle is counted from the top or the bottom. There was a pause and he said, "There's five slots..." Ah yes. so slot three is in the middle. Our incisive, pertinent queries answered, we chatted for a while about the roads in North Carolina and made vague plans to hook up next time I was in the area. The rest of the installation was fairly straightforward, and it's nice to see that the carbs can be synched without removing the tank. The bike runs great now. with no hesitaiton, a bit more intake noise and nice, juicy midrange, just like I wanted. Thanks Mark and Chris! Jason
Thanks Chris! Great looking aluminum mounting plate and O ring system! My old one will be sent out tomorrow, great deal too!
Another happy convert to our fold. Coming right at you. Post up what you think when you get it installed. You guys need to stop hanging out with your mayor! Get back on the beer, eh.
Can't comment on the jet kit. AFAIK, the Factory Pro is the only kit that replaces the needle which is IMHO critical to getti g these carbs dialed in. The cans look great. Any open and free flowing tail end is going to work.
Hey, sorry I missed this. When your stuff comes in and you're doing the install, give me a call and we'll figure it out.
Does anyone care for blue? I make these in clear and black anodized. Black is the default color unless someone makes a special request. My anodizer tells me that orange sadly fades with engine heat. Since my S bike is blue, I'm swapping to one of these.
Blue works the same and nobody but me will see it but... The indention is for additional clearance for the secondary butterfly linkage.
Recieved my kit today. (Except the back ordered pre filter.) Looks very nice. I will work on installing this weekend. Last weekend I built a bash/skid plate for the adv990r. Getting ready for some cold weather back roads trips. Thanks a lot, great response! Noel.
Hi Noel. You may notice that I am now including a tube/clamp/ and zip ties to move crankcase vent from the pcv valve to the countershaft sprocket. I will get up some pictures and a how to addendum to the installation post later today or tomorrow. Also, I have included some thin silicone gaskets for those who have a loose fit on the install. Some other filters and adapters seem to stretch the velocity stacks and make the connection a little looser than optimal. Only use these if you find that the plate is loose once clamped down. 95% won't need these. Looking forward to hearing how its working for you. It will fit on it but it won't stay on. I'll try to figure something out for you.
06 950 motor (15,000mi.) in 04 chassis (04 carbs with 50,000 miles) dual FMF Q mufflers, Flappendectomy, canisterectomy, SAS blocked tested at 800-2500 ft, high humidity in cold hazy 40 F air installed SW foam filter and original settings produced softer hit than stck box throughout, flat, weak on torque but ran "just OK" (200mi. test) light brown plug (no white) original: 45 pilot, 1.5 turns, stock needle at 3 from top 160r / 155f mains 2.5mm float levels got FactoryPro kit, set floats to 4mm, new 45 pilots, 1.75 turns, FP needles(steep taper) at 3 from top, 172r/170f mains I got smooth transition and good torquey throttle response up from all RPM's 60mph to 80 mph pulls very good hot. stable idle at 1300 rpm, hot or cold. no surging at steady throttle at any speed (60 mile test) chocolate brown plug at low rpm or high rpm chop works for me (P.S. my velo stacks were loosey goosey at the SW plate, so I made gaskets with 1mm thick rubber gasket material from the Hardware store plumbing section, nice n tite now)
Sounds good! You may still be a little rich by the sound of that plug. Also, I have some additional gaskets available if the fit is loose. The rig should fit tight but I have found that other types of filters, the BMC principally, stretch the tabs on the plastic velocity stacks... Heat and pressure are never good things for thermoplastics...
Package on my desk today when I got in. w00t! I'm still gathering parts, but looking forward to getting this baby installed. Was wondering what the tube was for, now I know. -rage
Can I get some thoughts on plug color and jetting from everyone? This is after 300km of varied riding, from low revs to highway, plenty of WOT. 168/170 mains, 45 pilots, FP needles on 3rd clip, 4mm floats, air jets stock. To me, that looked like the tips were too white ie lean. So I upped the mains to 170/172, and did the same ride again: This looks a better color, but now there's a lot more of these little golden lumps on it...what are they? Top end power was pretty comparable to 168/170.... 170/172 with the 45 idles is much richer than recommendations for this filter .... but the plugs in the first pic seemed to have white tips to me, and talking to a lot of folks locally who are running this style of foam filter now, most of them are running mains well into the 170's and even 180's But I'm still getting slight bogging down low though, so I suspect 45's might be too rich for my bike. But whenever I go back to 42 idles, it pops and crackles like a mofo on decel. Shit-hot everywhere over 4000rpm though, and 6.5L / 100 km too
