PC's Adventures in Pictures

This is a place in Edgewater Park that I use to play around when I was younger.


This is the Red Dragon Canoe Club.

A friend of mine lived nearby and we use to go down to the Delaware River and see what we could find.

I really don't know why they call it a canoe club when all that they have here are sailboats!

There isn't much down here unless you like small rocks and water.


Although a couple of neighbors of my friend were out here along the shore one time and found a dead body ! :eek1 :eek1 :eek1

No such finds for me though !

You can see the Burlington Bristol Bridge in the background.
It is to the right sticking out to the left of those buildings.
This is from the southern side.

I would have taken more pictures but the gentleman in the picture informed me as soon as I got there that I was on private property! :eek1

He and a couple of women were sitting there when I came up, or down actually, and I explained our game and they thought it was interesting.
They were also glad my bike was quiet.
It is a Honda ya know !

If its a canoe you want here is one stuck in a tree!


This is known localy as the Canoe Tree.
There was a flood here in July 2004.
Here are some pictures of the area and the canoe in the tree.
The Beach#1 mentioned in the article is off to the left of my picture.

Here is a better picture of the Canoe Tree.

Everything at this location has been returned to normal, but some other dams breached in this flood have yet to be remade.
Probably local politics at work.

Another interesting buillding in Riverside is this Watch Case building.


This was the world's largest watch case manufacturer, doing business around the globe from the Philadelphia Watch Case Company Building.

I found some history here which says this building was built in 1906 and this also lists the Case Grades they made.

I don't know if all, but some of the watch cases were made of gold and I found some interesting notes on this link (scroll down to the bottm). Here is what it says: "Ornate clock tower is the perfect symbol atop the seven-story office tower of The Philadelphia Watch Case Co. in Riverside, NJ. The factory, which produced gold watch cases, had 32 fire and burglar-proof vaults. Floors were sloped so gold particles could be flushed into a cistern and recovered."

If you ever want to see who your real motorcycle friends are just make sure your bike is in every picture whether you were there or not.


Someone had tagged an observatory, and it looks like someone found intelligent life out there !
That's the PC Nebula in the Honda System.

Someone suggested I put my bike into this picture.


Who was I to let them down !

My bike is in this picture, can you find it?


The tag here was the giant plastic cow in the field with its face on the utter side.
This was an attempt to help a photographically challenge rider make his picture look presentable.

I have yet to see this in person, but I will some day.

Graves were being tagged around this time and while I was looking those up I found these.


These are pictures off the web and I have never been to them.
I think one was in Pennsylvania and the other was in New Zeland.

I bought a '98 PC in "99. Put 25,000 trouble free miles on it and sold it in 2000, Big mistake, wish I had it back

I totally understand !

The new NT700V is said to have the same engine.
The less you have to fuss with a bike the more riding you can do !

Not as much carrying space as the PC though.
I love that part of the PC.

At the boat ramp in Trenton I did not take too many pictures of the area.
I have since remedied my approach to the places I go by looking for interesting things to take pictures of.
My friend Ben took this picture for me with my camera.


This is the picture I took just before he got there.


It took me a little while to find this exact spot where the tag was placed.
The idea was that this is about as far north and west as you could get in the Southern Tag game.
The Southern Tag game has a northern boundary of I-195.
But I-195 does not extend totally to the Deleware River or to the Atlantic Ocean.
That is what made the exact location vague.

I started looking a little further north and found this location.


That is the Delaware River behind the trees, and there was a walkway down there.
I wondered if the tag would be down there?
But the rider who placed the tag I believe would not go into a place that is questionable as far as beinig illegal.

What I did find here was this marker which actually surprised me when I read it.

OK, so I never paid much attention in History class in school !

I had thought that John Fitch did his inventing around New York City.

I do believe his engine was cast in Monmouth County which is on the other side of the state.

The other thing that struck me here was the date of 1790.
I had never really thought about how early that was for such an invention.

The John Bull locomotive wasn't invented until 1831.
Also used in New Jersey not to far from here.
More on the John Bull later at some point.

Although I never really thought about it before, but my brother and I went to John Fitch Elementary School in Levittown, PA just a little further down the river.

Here is some brief information from wikipedia on John Fitch.

From reading that I found out why there was a school named after him in PA.
Levittown is in Bucks County, PA.
Who knew ?

There is a lot of information about John Fitch on the internet so I won't plague you with it here.

Another thing I thought weird about this marker is that what in the world would anyone want to come to Trenton for ?

Back in those days Trenton was a big manufacturing town.
The Trenton Makes The World Takes was a big slogan for the city.

They even produced a car called the Mercer.
Mercer comes from Mercer County which Trenton is in.
Hugh Mercer was one of Geroge Washington's Generals in the Revolutionary War, and he died at the Battle of Princeton (more on that later too), which is also in Mercer County.

You can not go much further north on the Delaware River from here because of the "Trenton Falls".
Far from being real waterfalls, the river gets too shallow here to navigate boats through and there are a lot of rocks sticking up out of the water.
This is where the tidal waters of the Delaware stop.
From here north it is fresh water.

On to the dinosaurs!



I know you can't tell from that picture.
I had to park across the street to get a picture with my bike in it.
The traffic here is pretty bad for a small town.

Here is a better picture of the statue that I took after I found a place to park.


I'll bet you don't think of dinosaurs when you think of New Jersey do you?
I don't either.
But here in Haddonfield, NJ the first nearly-complete dinosaur skeleton was found by William Parker Foulke in 1858.
Hence the name Hadrosaurus foulkii.
I wonder if Hadro comes from the towns name?

From reading the article in the link posted above I found out that this is not the exact location of the find.
I would like to find this spot and check it out some time.

It's not that far from me, so I'll have to make a special stop here and check it out.

Hadrosaurus foulkii @

I thought covered bridges went out after the horse and buggy,
but apparently developer Bob Scarborough did not think so in 1959.


Here is a nice picture of it on a snowey winter day.

This was taken before I decided to take lots of pictures at interesting places or you would see more of it.

For you women out there.


And not just because it is pink in color !


The first picture is the back of the house.
A very nice looking building.

This plaque is located on the back porch next to the door.


I liked the view of the front yard looking towards the house.


They also have a plaque in the front yard.


The Stokes family which she is related to were prominent in this area.
Stokes Road which goes through Medford commemorates the name.

Their website tells more about this fine home and Alice Paul's life.

So much history here I never knew about.
My family had moved back to this area around 1975 and Alice Paul died in 1977, but I don't remember ever hearing about her before.

Mount Laurel has always seemed tucked away to me for some reason.
It is actually along busy State Highway 73 and the New Jersey Turnpike (EXIT 4 ).

So this little building was a nice find since I had no Idea the town was around that long.



This plaque on the front of the building gives most of its history.


Here is a side picture with the Farmers Hall sign on the side.


One of the great things about riding around and checking out these places is the history you find.
Check out this link for the time frame of this building, and also check out the other time periods as well.
From those time periods you will find that George Washington and the Colonial Army stayed in this area for about a month.
Also General Clinton's army stayed in Mount Laurel as well.

The hill behind Farmers Hall is apparently where "Mount" Laurel got its name.
You can see the hill in the first picture.

Air Victory Museum.



I never knew this was there either.

The only things you can see outside are this Awax Airplane and the Helicopter in the background.
Which for some reason I never took a closeup picture of.
Well, I thought I did, but I can't find it, so that means I didn't take one !



They do own two of their own aircraft according to their website.
An F-86L, and a Fisher FP-404.
It seems their mission is to keep vinage aircraft in a usable condition, as far as flying is concerned anyway.

Ok, this was actually a movie prop from the 1955 film "The Prodigal", staring Lana Turner.

Here is some more information from Roadside America.

This guy seems to know the local issues the owner has had.

Babylonian Fertility God @

If you read any of the information links on the Farmers Hall post you may have seen where William Evans donated an acre of land in 1698 for the purpose of building a Quaker Meeting House.
The location is across the street from Farmers Hall.
The side picture of Farmers Hall was taken from the Quaker Meeting House lawn from about this same spot.


This is currently called Mount Laurel Friends Meeting.

This building was built from native sandstone quarried from the mount across the street.
It is said to be the oldest Meeting House in the Country and is still being used.



It was apparently named Evesham Friends Meeting at one time.

The church originated in 1695.
Part of this building was built in 1760 with an addition in 1798.

Here are some more old ruins at Hampton Furnace in the Pine Barrens.


Originally founded by Clayton Earl, the furnace opened around 1795 and lasted about 50 years.

When I was in the Boy Scouts we used to put canoes in the small river near here.
I seem to remember there being more to the walls then there was this time.


I did this the same day I did the Apple Pie Hill Firetower and Atsion Iron Furnace.

This was also an Iron Furnace town which is not too far from the one at Atsion.

If you look at my map you will see that this place is out in the middle of the woods.
About 2 1/2 miles of dirt/sand road to get back here.
The road isn't too bad for a dirt road, but it could be better.



I drove forward and around the ruins and I noticed the sand was black for some reason.

Fortunately I did not get stuck anywhere around here.
I did that later at Apple Pie Hill.

There are many old Iron Furnace Towns in the Pine Barrens, but most of them you can not even tell they were there.

The size of the floor here seems to be about the same size as the floor at Atsion Furnace.

Bull on the Barn !


Nice name for a restaurant ! ?

Its full name is Bull on the Barn Crab House & Seafood Restaurant.

I expected a Steak House !

Notice the half submerged boat in the back which has tables in it for dining.



According to their website the bull painting was originally an advertisement for "Bull Durham Tobacco" in 1914, and it was repainted in 2002.

Back in late June I took a ride that included the Bull on the Barn.
At the time it was the current tag.
There were several other places I visited the same day because they were somewhat close to each other.

We have all heard of the Boston Tea Party.
But has anyone ever heard of the Greenwich Tea Burning Party ?

Nah, me either !

It did happen though !
And here is the monument to prove it.


Aparently the Bostonians were not the only ones tired of being taxed.


So here on December 22, 1774 a group of local citizens dressed up like indians and burned British Tea.


And they seem pretty proud of it too !

The bronze plaque has weathered over the years, but you can make out boxes and some people dressed as indians.


The monument was dedicated September 30, 1908.

The painting on the information sign looks very similar to what is on the bronze plaque above.

This site shows the monument at its dedication.

A few of the names on the monument stuck out to me.
The last name of Elmer stands out because there is a town not too far from here named Elmer, NJ.
And the last name of Parvin because there is a State Park named Parvin State Park close by as well.

This was originally designed to be a house.

HONEST !!!

A Futuro House.


There might even be one in your state.
We have two !


They only made about 100 of these things, so you better hurry if you want one !



So it needs a little work !

Yes they were originally designed to be houses.
Here is their history which starts from the late 60's.
Go figure !

I found some pictures of the inside (as planned ) and a Futuro Floorplan.

To get to this marina you travel through nothing but marsh..., sorry..., wetlands.
As you pull up to the end of the road you see this odd oval thing just off to the left.

Here is a view from the dock at Hancock Harbor where this fine specimen is located.



I don't know why, but they don't list the UFO on their website !




I'm not sure what this thing below is, but it looked interesting.
Probably a land based buoy/lighthouse that looks like it got into an accident.


This nice mural sits off to the left when you enter the boatyard.



There is quite a bit of stuff here.
The marina, the UFO (which was going to be used as a gift shop), a store/bait shop, a restaurant and more STUFF.

I liked this display of old crab trab buoys and old boat propellers.



I also liked this old Coca-Cola thermometer.
It was about 18 inches tall.

Futuro House, Greenwich @

The person who tagged this place made their picture look old by making it black & white.
Didn't work to well with my 90's fairing futuristic style trunk laden bike.

This is Flanigan Brothers Boatyard in Fairton.

Even their website photo is in black & white!

What made this place special was the railway boat ramp that was installed when the building was built in 1931.
The Flanigan Brothers bought the place in 1950 and it has been a boatyard ever since.
