2008 KLR650. Died suddenly while being ridden. Won't restart. Spark, yep. Compression, yep but I didn't put a gauge on it. Gas, yep, nothing stuck in float, can pass air through jets. Fuel gets delivered from tank to carbs. Took off the carbon canister et al, no affect. Put gas into cylinder via spark plug, wants to fire, but no. Could the CDI have failed? Anything I am missing? Less that 5K miles on the bike.

    Thanks.

Did you check the air filter? It's a longshot but it sounds like you've checked just about everything. Short of that you might have a problem with the ignition...

Good question. A friend grounded it while I spun the starter. He said it was a good spark. But I didn't see it. Would yellow be an indication of something? Weak spark?

I don't have the tools to check the timing. Is this a known issue? Wouldn't it wipe out valves? That would be a big ouch. :eek1

They have been known to break the balancer lever spring and to fling a broken spring end thru the cam chain...it can take out the valves too, sometimes a person will get lucky and it only jumps a tooth making for hard starting.

Might be a long shot, but I would check the side stand safety switch.
It could have shorted out causing intermittent spark ignition.

You said you blew out the jets, how about checking the small hole in the carb body (behind the butterfly plate) that control the idle circuit.

Any chance you got some really bad gas?

I'll shine a light down the spark plug hole and check for damage. Funny thing is that it first died down about 25 mph in low revs. I'd hope it would need more stress than that to jump a tooth.

Haven't eliminated the gas. Same gas that I am using to test with is out of the tank. I'll try some starter fluid and see what happens.

Re the side stand, wouldn't it not crank over if it was bad?

I was under the impression the safety switches killed the spark, but I could be wrong. Some one more experienced with the KLR hopefully will chime in.

    One other thought Mike
I have heard that if the vent tube from the gas tank gets blocked by debris, it will create a vacum that can cause fuel starvation.

Upon opening the gas cap if you hear a slight hissing sound, check the vent tube

KLR's are notorious for their kick stand kill switches. Most people disable them soon after they buy the bike. You might check that.

Try a new correct spark plug. Brand new , gapped correctly. The old plug may produce a spark while you test it, but under compression it may not function. Eliminate the easy common stuff 1st, then go from there. The fuel is also suspect..try a shot of ether in the airbox, see if it fires......

I have a 2008 KLR. The kick stand safety switch can cause it. Just take the two wires leading to it and wire them together. Also the clutch safety switch can be bad, but seems to be much less frequent than the side stand.

Did you do the recall on the wiring harness?? There is a spot on the front right down by the voltage regulator where the harness rubs on a bracket. This has shorted out a number of 2008 models.

Also the tank vent can be a cause if plugged like indicated above.

I'll give it a try. I did the harness recall the hard way.
