Hoots Magoon's thread with the tail box on his 650X (nice bike, btw) has me thiking about doing the same to my KLR. Not so much for camping, but more like a KLR Survival kit for the bike and me for light and fast day tours. Bsically, I need something which will only the bear essentials to keep the bike alive, e.g. basic tool kit, tube, patch kit, pump, etc., and survival equip. for me, e.g. space blanket, mre, etc. This stuff will also double as an emergency repair kit for commuting. I'm curious as to whether others have done this, and: 1) List 2) Size of box
Pelican 1400 bolted onto DR650 tail rack. All the tools I'll need, air compressor, spare tubes, LED headlight. Some spare bolts and survival crap in the stock plastic tool holder. Looks gay, works great, waterproof, cheap. pelicancasesforless.com

I basically took a tape and measured the dimensions I wanted then went to the Pelican Case web-site. They have a calculator somewhere on the site. Then just enter your dimensions and it will give you the closest cases to your measurements. I then found the 1450 case on eBay for less than half of retail. When the case arrived, I bolted it on, and put some bungie buddies on the top to hold down the sleeping bag. The case hold my pump tools, change of clothes, camera, and assorted junk. I'll post some pictures when I get home from work tomorrow.
I'm planning on getting two of these first aid boxes here and bolting them down in front of the skid plate (standard KLR tool tube location.) I currently have 30cal ammo cans there -- they work well and hold tool kit, spare tube, first aid kit, space blanket, raingear, long johns and a couple other 'every ride' essentials but since I put on a oversize rotor I discovered them rubbing the wheel under panic stop practice. The first aid boxes should give an inch and a half more clearance to avoid that problem. While I was at that site I also noticed these--lightweight plastic versions of the well-known 50cal ammo can, look promising for side cases, much less expensive than Pelicans.

I'm this close to getting a Pelican 1400 for the rack on my KLX250 but I happen to have 3 0.30cal ammo boxes just sitting on a shelf that I've never found a use for... Sir, step away from the keyboard and put the credit card away. I think I'll stop by Lowes tomorrow and pick-up some brackets. It should only take 1 beer to install it.
Thanks for the replies! I've got two Pelican 1430s as side cases, and now I'm thinking about a 1200 as a top case. It should fit on the rack just about perfectly. I really just need a small box to hold my Wolfman tool kit w/o fear of someone walking off with it. I do like the look of the ammo cans, though.
Looks really good! Looks like you can just about get everything my the kitchen sink into the case and the tubes. What model Kawi is that?
Anybody tried out the 1600? I have 1550s as saddlebags but I am thinking about a lockable top box before going to Mexico. Is the 1600 too big?
nope, i live in a small town, i use a little vasoline on the cap threads it waterproofs them and keeps them from sticking. 06KLR
I have a 1550 as a top box and it feels a bit on the big side but that's just me. When I add the panniers, those will also be 1550's so maybe the top box will look normal.
