MTA to test locomotive engineers for sleep apnea

NEW YORK – In the wake of the fatal Metro-North train crash a year ago this month in which four Hudson Valley residents were killed, the railroad will test all of its locomotive engineers for sleep apnea.

The train, from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central Terminal, derailed in the Bronx when the engineer fell asleep at the switch from sleep apnea.

The MTA will spend up to $200,000 on a seven-month pilot project to test the engineers. Initial screening will be conducted by the railroad's Occupational Health Services Department, said spokeswoman Marjorie Anders.

Those recommended for additional screening will be referred to the contractor, Persante health Care Inc. of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, which specializes in sleep disorders. Overnight testing will be conducted if deemed necessary.

Any employee who requires a sleep apnea device to use nightly will be provided one at no cost.
