How long are they supposed to stay on for? Till I turn them off? They seem to turn themselves off.

I may have dreamed this, but I think I read somehwhere that if the load on the electrical system becomes too high that the ZFE will turn off the heated grips in an effort to keep the battery from going flat.

Again, I can't be 100% sure this is true, but did read it somewhere....

Were you running with a heavy electrical load?
Do you have a voltage monitor installed?

I think this is only a feeling of yours. I've got the same on mine, when I ride while it is cold outside I have the feeling that the heat has disappeared, but than again turn them off and you'll see the difference :D

I've had mine on low for about 3 months non-stop. They've never shut off, and I run a heated jacket and gloves (and GPS occasionally).

This is what my owner's manual says in "Operation>Heated Handle Bar Grips" section:

"The increase in power consumption caused by the heated hand grips can drain the battery if you are riding at low
engine speeds. If the battery is inadequately charged, the heated hand grips are switched off to ensure starting capability"

My manual's for bikes made after June 2010. BTW, manuals are downloadable from the International BMW Motorrad website.

Don't you even shut them down when you stop for gas?

Thanks Gary for proving I'm not totally crazy! :D

(Thanks also for the link to the manuals - I'm going to put a soft copy on the thumbdrive I carry around on the bike with my copy of the BMW RepRom)

Well, I do turn off the bike. But the switch stays on.

OK I lied, there was a warm day or two I turned them off. Otherwise - always on.

Another quick point is that the grips don't turn on unless the bike is actually running. With the key on but not running the grips will stay cold.

I'm having grip problems on my 2010 F800GS (because I maybe damaged the element on one side) and this old thread came up in a search. Figured I'd throw, even if it's a years stale. I added to a 7 year old thread yesterday, so this is nothing!
