Ok guys ... seems i had a good time at the weekend and my front rim is fucked now So my question is where is the best plase to go for a new one and no i dont want a KTM one many thanks guys
Contact Laurie ( spares guru) at Dalby Moto , he can do you an Excel for about $ 300 that will do the job 1000 times better than the original did. I did and have never looked back . It's not a KTM pattern rim on the bikes with Dual discs on the front , it's a Husky spoke pattern. Cheers Alan
Have used a set of SM Pro/Talon wheels for a few years now (from JTR direct, or Ballards), and while I wrecked both original (Excel that is)wheels over the same terrain the SM Pros are still undented... Cheers waldecker
Good thread timming, after the weekend my stock front rim has so many flat spots that the tyre and tube keep spinning on the rim. Mortaygo, does the A60 Excel come in a 1.85 or only a 1.60? I've had the 1.60 SM Pro on my 950, very tough, I also have a spare front wheel with the 1.60 Excel and rim lock, tough too. This time I want to go a 1.85 with a rim lock.
I wanted A 1.85 width rim too , only way I could work out to get one was to import a Sun rim from the US ( only other supplier of 1.85 I could find ) , as I couldn't find anyone with them for sale here so I went with the 1.60 Excel . I don't notice much difference in the bike with the 1.60 except maybe a bit more wear on the centre knobs on the tyre due to being more rounded profile with the narrower width and I reckon the 640 actually handles slightly better with the narrower front rim ( might just be that knobby front tyres are designed primarily for a 1.6 rim). Alan
fairly certain only in a 1.6. although guys are having great results with a rounded profile sun rim from waner wheels. not sure what model but think it was a 1.85. Joe
Thanks for the info fellas. I have a 1.85 Excel on the Tenere but I think it has a different number of spokes. I must check that. The only prob I found with the 1.60 front was the Safari tanked 950 was like a hot knife, and any sand was like butter. I'll have a look at the Sun rims, can't say I ever heard of them though.
Katoom same ride on my 990 and my front was like a football. Sent it to Ash's in Brisbane to be re rolled but they said it was cracked. I claimed on insurance and it was replaced with a Sun Rim which is the same size as original. Have had no problems so far. Ashs reckon Sun ones are as hard as to reroll. Anyone else had a Sun?
Thanks for the replys guys Ive been intouch with Warner Wheels Joe and there going to sort it but can only get poxy gold rims so there going to stove it black for $40
The replacement from KTM is branded Saxxess. I don't know if it is truely different from the Behr originals, but I've not had a dent yet and it has taken some hits that I reckon would've bent the original(s). But I probably don't ride as hard as some of you loonies.
Let us know what you come up with, What sort of $$ are you/We up for I am in the same boat, out of round and cracking at the spoke holes.
I got a SUN rim on my previous XRV750, got it from "The wheel Works" Macarthur, Victoria, the guy is good to deal with, and can spoke a true rim.The bikes handling was improved and the rim was a chunkier profile.
I put a Sun 1.85 on the 990 with no problems so far. If you are thinking of running a heavy duty, full nobby like a Dunlop 908RR or a Mich Desert then don't go narrower than 1.85 as if you have to fix it on the side of the road it will be a PITA. These tyres have a thicker sidewall to resist pinch flats that the normal enduro and MX knobbies. With these tyres the use of a rim lock on a rim narrower than 1.85 will make it even harder to fix a flat. Lightfoot Engineering did mine here in Melb.
thanks for all the replys guys ... i had a quote for $378 for a 1.85 rim but i went for a new set of wheels .. the wifes going to kill me i want a set with knobs and a set with scops so im using this as an excuse
