I was finally able to get down to Moab and ride the White Rim Trail!!! I've been trying to fit this into my schedule for a few years now as it is a must do for any dual sport rider. The last few attempts were postponed mostly due to weather. I had been debating on the KTM 950 or the KLX 300. As I was going solo I opted for the KLX. The plan was to leave super early (as opposed to super, super early) Sunday morning from Durango. It's 3 1/2 hours to Dead Horse Point so I planned to leave at 4:30 to be down there by 8 am. This was not to happen as my neighbors dog (don't send this to the basement, please) kept me up until I finally left my house around 1:30 am. Drove as far as Hole in the Rock and fell asleep in the truck for a couple hours. Early breakfast at Denny's in Moab and I was on the trail by 8. I parked out near the intersection of the highway and the Mineral Bottom Road and opted for the clockwise route as I felt I should go through the gate and pay my $5. My first stop was about 25 miles from camp. I ran into two bicylclists that were attempting to ride the loop in a day. I probably stopped every 15 miles or so. At my lunch stop I ran into a group of riders on BMW F800's, R1200's and a Vstrom. Hi to Philip and Amy if you see this. They were riding from SLC and were probably gonna finish late in the day. Down by the river..... I was able to poach a camp site up near Dead Horse Point..... And had a peaceful dinner..... And slept in quiet solitude...... Monday I had a couple hours so I explored some of the ATV routes up top. Lots of sand, that's all I can say. Now that I know the route I might be up for taking the 950 next time. I don't think I would go solo, though. The litlle 300 felt small for some of the long stretches but was such a toy compared to the big bike......... My total time for the loop was 7 hours (110 miles)at my solo old man pace. Hope you enjoy.....
I just rode it for the first time with my 2 brothers and father. Rode counter clockwise, my 22 year old Honda Transalp did fine, also had a DRZ400, DR650 and a GS1100. Took From 9am to 5pm with lots of stops for pictures. The highlight of our trip! Rode some other more technical trails (metal masher,fins and things and some others) those were best done on serious (small) bikes, rode a WR250 Yamaha on those. Every day was awesome, always wanted to ride slick rock but it wasn't as much fun as I had hoped.
Nice report. The first time I did it I was on a bicycle and a KTM 640A flew by us. I bet the guy was having a blast! Haven't done it on a motorcycle yet. Hit me up next time you plan to go there. I might ride down and meet you.
