I know lots of people that only smoke fri sat nts while having few ales and say they are not addicted, but yet act like someone that is . ( not saying you are - just posing the question ) . Some people can take it or leave it easier then others for sure , but anyone that has done any study into nicotine addiction would say that anyone that smokes in a pattern regularly would be an addict . I may be wrong but i would reckon your body and mind is very much conditioned to smoke just those days and you would have some sort of "pang , craving, desire to smoke at those times" . Come friday would you feel agitated or miss it if you didnt have you cigs . ? Addiction is a sneaky bastard of a thing
Here's the strange thing, I only smoke at work, now if I take two weeks off, I don't smoke at all and have no craving. I visit my folks and have a cuppa with my mum and brother who both sit there smoking and I don't, I have no interest or craving to do so. I think it's phsycological and the triggers are when I get to work. I don't seem to need it, I just like having it with my coffee, but at home I can drink coffee without it no problem, don't miss it. If I have Friday off, I don't get agitated or miss it, doesn't even enter my mind. I have kids and I wont smoke around them. I originally gave up when my missus got pregnant to support her. We took it up again briefly after the kids were born but it was too much hassle to wash the smell off us each time before we tended to the kids so gave up again. I only started up a couple of years later during a stress period and because I was only smoking a pack of 20 a week, never thought too much about it. But it might be time to toss it again, Which is why I'm on this self help thread.
If you can go two weeks without a smoke then it should be easy to go another two weeks after that. I found the first couple of weeks were the roughest....started to get easier after that. From what I have read it is simply best to just give them up...not easy.
The Wife went in for a lung biopsy last Wednesday, they used a keyhole method which left some big 'stab wound' like scars and they found the RH side lung closed up at the bottom and stuck to the rear of the rib cage but no cancers or lupus scaring as they first thought. The surgeon said "youre so young,( shes 49)"..."narrowing of the arteries to the lungs..." And "...you're been a smoker..." ( she battled with the fags for years...) I pushed him on wether this could be reversed a little but he wouldn't commit... Anyway,it's back to the Specialist this week to get the biopsy results and work out some sort of action plan... ...still she's still in extreme pain from the op and sleeps most of the day away from the drugs.
I feel for you both. Good news that no cancer was found. Still must be very hard to deal with though.
Yes,our specialist called it an 'good result'... She has thickened arteries in the lungs, smoking is nearly always a factor. She goes for more tests today, hopefully we can see an artery specialist on Friday.
John Your family is in my thoughts today and I hope you get more good results. Tell your wife that you love her and share your strength with her as you go through this time together. SJ
Used to smoke White Ox rollies ....got down to a small packet a fortnight ...had a chest x-ray before Christmas and all came up clear, so I quit while I was ahead on New Years Eve using Nicobates ..... made quiting so much easier, while I still get the odd desire for a smoke it only lasts a minute or so after taking a few weep breaths of air or going and brushing my teeth ....hope this helps others trying to kick the habit... feel so much better now that I quit ...now to loose 10 kilos is next on the list... gave up the booze a quite a few years ago Regards Steve.P
Well not exactly going to plan, she now has a post op infection...talking doing the big heart lung job,if well enough... ...over at Prince Charles hosp. chemside.
Still in St Andrews waiting for a bed in Prince Charles, Where the transplant unit is...but only looking at lung arteries, first up. The Bundaberg influx last week to there has really Put the pressure on them, apparently.
well just gave up on fr 1/3 seems the greatest incentive was the heart surgery i just had to have in a hurry :huh and only got home now no bike riding for a few weeks they say so will go with there advice with that not saying smokin was the only factor but it didnt help hope it stays going like that icon
We arrived back home a few weeks ago,Colleen was very weak still from infections that just wouldnt let go... Finally,a few days ago she has brightened up,drugs might be working at last...and we are moving to a low set house to make it easier for her...
I came home from work one day and the wife said smokes are going up to $2 a packet. I had eleven smokes left in my packet so I put my lighter in with the smokes and said I quit. Everyday for 6 months I put those smokes in my pocket and carried them around with me. I knew I could have a smoke anytime I wanted but I talked myself out of it. If I did not have those smokes in my pocket I would have gone crazy. I enjoyed the challenge of giving up.
Just hit 4 months without a smoke...still get the odd urge but very seldom now. John, glad to hear your wife is starting to feel better.
Thanks,She's looking a little brighter and received a call from her income protection insurer informing her they will pay 90% of her wage for 2yrs. Still, her quality of life is really crap...
