Here is a comparison of various pumps. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/original-mini-foot-pump-tire-inflator-by-minifootpump#pumpsizes I carry one of those foot pumps, I have the two cylinder version. You have to be a little careful using them but they are small and work fine. I have had mine for many years.
I got a small bicycle pump at wally world but I've seen them at Target too. It's labeled Bell brand like the helmets. The neat thing about it is that it pumps on both strokes. It works surprisingly well and was only $10
I got a similar pump and found the hose end was unacceptable. The pump seemed fine, but that does little good when the valve stem connection does not seal. I have seen less expensive hand pumps with better hose ends than what mine came with. Maybe I just got a bad hose, but the design seems inferior to other air pump hoses. Granted, this is a $12.00 pump so I got what was paid. Someday I will try to replace the hose. Caveat emptor. I think the Topeak Road Morph is a better pump (and costs more than twice as much): http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-Road-Morph-Bike-Gauge/dp/B000FI6YOS
I'll second the topeak morph. I've got the mini morph, but only because I wanted something smaller for cycling as well. It's small, light and has given me no problems for the four or so years I've had it. The flexible hose is awesome, it makes pumping up the tires so much easier than the hand pumps without them. If you only want a pump for fixing flats, then it probably doesn't matter much. I often add some air for the road section home after a dual sport ride though, and I love the mini morph for how easy it makes it.
Matters what PSI you're aiming for, lots of bicycle hand pumps will do dirt bike tires, but they may not do higher PSI for road bikes. Keep an eye on that.
Road bicycles run MUCH higher pressures than any motorcycle i've heard of I add a +1 on the twisted throttle foot pump, I've never had a problem with it sealing to the stem, and can take my 150-70/17 from 20psi to 35psi in about 3 min (if I'm slow)
That they do, some of the hand pumps for bicycles are just rubbish and will not work for road bicycles or road motorcycle pressures, for instance I have a hand pump that starts to bypass at around 27 psi, very annoying after you spend 10 minutes trying to get up to pressure and it doesn't budge. If you buy quality, no issue.
Is that "twisted throttle" foot pump are stable when you pumping or required special balancing skills to use it on uneven surface?
i use it with my hand . you could use the fold down part to stand on then step on the plunger, but i found just pushing down worked ok.
I've been using a Zefal HP bicycle hand pump for years. The wife finally took pity and gave me a electric compressor for Christmas. But the Zefal was doing the job.
It would be very tricky to use on an uneven surface. If you step on it off axis it will tip over and twist up the little wire loop that you stand on with your other foot. Once you realize this limitation it works fine. Also the fitting on the end of the hose is different than any other air chuck that I have seen, but once again, it is OK after you get used to it.
I have a 12 volt pump but I also have a bicycle hand pump in my hydration pack. Never had to use it but I bought quality for my bicycles and have no concerns about its ability to go mc tires.
