In an earlier thread I commented on the apparent lack of rear braking ability. I got some suggestions, I took a few and replaced the shoes, sanded and cleaned the drum surface, checked for or grease leakage and when satisfied that all was clean put it back together. Here's the issue: I've got lots of pedal travel but very little braking power. At rest the rear adjustment is just shy of causing noticeable drag on the rear wheel. What did I miss? As usual, Clymer isn't particularly helpful here nor did snobum's or Duane's sites offer any real meat for consumption beyond remove, replace and adjust.
Thanks, I'll have a look. I probably misunderstood that as an "at rest" as opposed to initial engagement. This is where experience pays off and I have not attained enough, yet.
Also pull the wheel and lightly sand the shoes(wear a dust mask and gloves). Grease the pivot points and clean the shoes afterwards with brake clean to remove your finger prints or any oils.
Actually this post is following a rebuild on the rear, new shoes, greased pins and cam faces and sanded drum. Once I get the arm to that nearly vertical position at engagement it seems like the rod is too short...I can't engage enought threads in the adjuster to make me feel like its truly secure. Is it possible the pivot cam is worn past service?
