This is a well know issue since '08 on these bikes but seems to only address 2013's. http://ultimatemotorcycling.com/bmw-recalls-2013-f800gs-f700gs-due-to-side-stand-issues/
Had my 2012 in the other day for it's 6000 mile service and they asked how everything was going. They even checked this part because they asked me about it. I told them it worked the other day!
Yeah, I posted this a day or two ago on the general 800 thread. It queered a deal on a new bike for me. They don't know when they can sell the bikes now. ____________ Has anyone heard anything about a very recent hold on new sales of the vertical twins due to an electrical problem that is possibly associated with the sidestand switch circuit? I've just learned that BMW has issued such a bulletin to US dealers.
The switch is a very loose fit and can move around/vibrate a lot while the bike is being ridden. I greased mine up when it was new with some stiff grease to prevent it rattling about. I test it frequently after going out on a ride.
"BMW says the side-stand switch, which prevents the engine from running with the side stand down while in gear, may malfunction. BMW says the switch may become damaged, and if malfunctioning will allow the engine to run even with the side-stand down." Well, on the bright side, it beats the shit out of having it fail and prevent the bike from starting. In which case you would have to jumper it like some people do anyways. Anybody else on here remember when bikes were sold without sidestand switches? Before lawyers became engineers.
Mine failed on my 09 650 about halfway home on a trip. Luckily I had read about it here on the forum and managed to jumper it with the kit I was carrying on my bike and made it home. I never bothered to have it repaired and haven't managed to do anything too stupid yet with it disabled.
i took that junk off mine the day i got it, when it went back to the dealer for a gas tank repair they asked me if it failed or if i just tossed it. i was wondering why the asked that.
My sidestand recall was taken care of last week by BMW of Jacksonville. There's some nut and bolt that they had to replace. They also replaced my complete left handlebar switch housing and my water pump under warranty. Nice dealership!!!
