I'm looking for some overpants for use while commuting to and from work. I'd like something that is water resistant and has a liner for those days when the weatherman misread his tea leaves, and and offers some basic protection. I found these while looking over the LeatherUp website: http://www.leatherup.com/p/Leather-...-Armored-Waterproof-Textile-Pants/139018.html and was wondering if anyone has used them.
I have used First Geat Overpants for years. No complaints. Removal liner for cold / hot applications. Good weather protection UNLESS you are in a torrential downpour. Then you are going to get a little wet. (This is usually where the Aerostich devotees chime in.)
Since a liner is acceptable for you I'd recommend not dicking arou d with anything else and go straight for the motoport ultra II. Your choice for stretch or mesh. Stretch will be highly water resistant for around45 min before leaking.
+1 on First gear overpants. I also am currently using the Bilt brand (cycle gear) type and they have been awesome. They are on the cheaper end but the ones that I purchased most recently run the same price as the first gear overpants.
I wear a pair of military surplus ecwcs pants over my work clothes. These are waterproof/windproof gore-seam. Only problem would be the openings to give access to pockets in the layers below are only closed with a snap. I am sure would let in water in a downpour. They are not insulated and only help keep you warm by stopping the wind. Maybe I am too cheap since I live off of a teacher's salary. Spending $35 for a pair at Army surplus two years ago=good deal. You can find them on eBay as well. I can only dream of dropping $1000 for new riding gear.
I got my Fieldsheer Mercury pants on sale for about $100. So far, they have been waterproof but haven't had them in a downpour. They are VERY warm. I don't even use the thermal liner unless it is in the 40s or less. I also don't wear them above 80 degrees because they are too warm even with the vents open. They do feel substantial and seem pretty well made, given the price. The Sliders Quest pants appear to be the same - just rebranded and with kevlar panels. At least that seems to be the consensus opinion. Those can regularly be found for $100 or less. Mercury 2.0: Sliders Quest:
I love love love love my Aerostich AD1's. They are flat-out waterproof and are very comfortable on the bike. If you're commuting, they're worth it.
+1 for my Aerostich Darien Lites. I wear long underwear under them when the temperatures cool. Great for shoveling snow in the winter too. daryl
