Well we know our XR600's are different in several ways to the U.S. versions and it's enough to warrant our own thread in Oz. My own interest is (was) in riding my XR600 locally but making my XR650L ultra reliable for long trips away to catch up with my ADV Brothers and keeping it stock so i can pick the phone up anywhere in the country and get parts overnight if needed, I don't want a Desert Racer so any parts put into the engine are aimed at longevity. If you like to modify your bike and talk about it thats ok too. As the heading implies this thread is for previous, current or XR curious folks to swap ideas and resources. hey keno, i like your taste my chook chasers are also cow chasers and for years i ran the tt 350 then one year i went for an xr 600 it was huge and so much power! (at the time) but i loved it dearly and it pulled the worlds most amazing wheelies looking back it was one of my favourite bikes how many ks are you legends getting out of your Ls
Yep they are fun Philth, 600 is nice and light, 650 is a bit fatter but gives good traction. When i pulled the cases apart to fit the kickstart at 78000k the bottom end and gears, bearings etc were all good but the bloke I got it off put a wiseco into the worn bore at 75000k and I gulped 4 litres oil in 3500k to Birdsville and back so i'll chuck a new piston into a 1st oversize before the run to DQB. My other 650L uses no oil at all. I would say 100000k is normal for a bottom end rebuild on an L used gently. The CDI issue is solved by the U.S. blokes who mount it in the air box for cooling. Ken is mobile.
ps there is no sweeter thump than a stock piped xr 6 with the baffle out its a deep rich thump that makes stainless piped bikes sound crass and crackly
+1. I've still got the old school white brothers alloy tapered pipe on my 1990 600 back in NZ, with adjustable end plate baffles for noise or stealth. Not sure if it makes any diffence to power or not, hardly ever get to ride it, but sure sounds goods. Main hassle is drum rear brakes, but it always gets the job done.
How'd ya be, I have 3 Staintune pipes sitting here and I swapped out the 650L muffler to put the 600 muffler on instead for that very reason, even the stock 650L crackles too much without the baffle.
I have owned a few XR600's and one 650L. They certainly have a sweet spot in my heart. Must agree with Phil, no thumper sounds better than a standard pipe XR6... Only a ktm950 with Akro's would give it a run for unique sound appeal... I ran a xr650l out to birdsville and across the desert then home via the plenty hwy. At hwy speeds with a load, it drank fuel like a V8 and oil like a ringer drinks bundy cans on a Friday night.. Never missed a beat though.. More pics...
I see a couple of desperate mugs are selling their big XR's lately in the flea market. It will leave a hole that will never be filled. While I freely acknowledge that there are much better bikes than the XR (I own one, a 640 KTM)) there is something about them that endears them to an owners heart. Of my 5 bikes, the only one registered is my XR600R.
Ha I misread that, but fully still agree. Had a few other big bore XRs with standard pipe & baffle out. I reckoned the 500RE sounded good at the time, but as a bogan 18 yo didn't have a clue about much else.
well said i remember thinking my xr was huge with so much power! recently i borrowed me mate hens old red one for a quick squirt thru bellthorpe it was tiny! but they still pull awesome wheelies!
I reckon they are tiny too, but light, I often wish it had an extra 4 inches between the bars and my feet so I got the rox risers and pushed them forward on the 650 but it's still tight. I considered a DR650 for longer trips but they feel even smaller, maybe its just the lower seat height. Never had that on my old yammy back in the hedland enduro days, maybe its just this gut overbalancing things.
They might not be desperate for cash but like me and can't move in his shed any more, i feel like one of those hoarders you see on tv.... With 5 bikes we are in the same club, I said to my Daughter the other day she might have to sell her xr250 because boyfriend has taken priority, answer came back SELL YOURS!!
Here is my Nephew Ryan on my 94' 600, he is 6'5" and I am only 6'2", he makes them look tiny but found it comfortable except for monkey butt a couple of days into it. I got the old 94 off fleabay from Townsville so Ryan could come along, put a D606 on the back, big tank and barkbusters and it did the 3000k round trip without a hitch apart from a fuel blockage which took 5 minutes to fix and is now the bike I ride most, bog stock standard and a pearler, still goes like thunder.
Was starting to get embarrasing at the servo's, hey mate have you got any delo 400? More pics added on post #1.
Any model with a rear disc brake. '91 onwards, from memory, they didn't change after that. You can't improve on perfection.
hey kenno did i read on hear somewhere that rising sun honda kept on importing the L long after everyone else stopped?
