Yes, ditch the front signals for some more normal ones. It's the rear ones that get broken off easy. I run nobbies all the time on slab. Some wear more quickly than others. I like being dirt ready all the time but will admit that nobbs don't corner as good as 50/50 tires and cause more vibes and noise. I got 2k out of a used Maxxis Desert IT that a friend gave me this summer. If the bike sounds and rides out OK, then go for it. I paid $2700 for my plated/DSed '03 KLX400R in May 2007.
make sure theres nothing nasty hiding behind the home made case saver. Might have learnt the hard way
Not normal, but some guys overfill so you have a visual "check" for your coolant level without pulling the cap.
Nah thats a bad idea. If you are putting exhaust into the coolant with a cracked head, it will pressurise into the overflow, and not come back to the rad in some cases. my truck does it
Yep - got out today..was a great ride...went back to stock gearing for the first time since I bought the bike ('05 now with 13,000 miles or so) - I'm wondering what took me so long...it's great gearing for dual sport rides...with a nice 70 mph cruise speed without "the buzz".
Well I finally re joined the ranks of DS rider. I used to have a 93 xr250l. Picked up an '09 S yesterday. Put about 75 miles on it today of easy brake in riding. Can't wait to get out and do some camping/trail riding. See you out there, Eric.
I can see that happening. Doesn't sound very likely, but I check mine by the rad anyway...just saying that's the rationale of folks I've seen do it.
The proper break-in for a DRZ is to ride the piss out of it. Dump the oil, change the filter, and ride the hell out of it. Really.
Bah! Ya bastard. We're dealing with a different kind of water in the northern hemisphere... (Summer's coming though)
Hey guys, Just returned from the Africa Race start in Marseille, where I had the chance to see a couple of slick DRZ400's. Riders are Carlo alberto MIGLIAZZA (#7) and Michele GALLIZIA (#8). More pics on request. If you don't know about my thread on the Africa Race, then check it out here
I just got a street legal "E" model. It's not in bad shape. The radiators are both a little out of shape but still holding water. I pulled the rubber snorkel off the air box and will need to rejet. I was wondering what you guys are running for a silencer. I didn't want to drill a bunch of holes in the stocker if an after market one is alot better. I'm hoping to get it running good and do a few trips on it this summer. Maybe you guys with some experience on this bike can tell me some problems to look out for. Thanks
As far as the silencer, just remove the end cap. That way, if you want to be quite, you can just put it back on. If your not worried about being quite, then get a MRD exhaust (the MRD/SSW race pipe). What to look for is all listed on TT http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=397 MCCT- loctite CS, primary nut, stater bolts, clutch bolts- water pump leak-ect...
I'm going to answer for Heath. They made them themselves last weekend. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get in on the build, but they looked fairly successful.
Hey Tony - awesome pics!!! Any chance of seeing details around this fairing? I'd love to see where the got it - amazing look - and proof again that a DRZ is a magnificently versatile motorcycle platform. thanks again! cm
You won't have to rejet after removing the snorkle. I like my Muzzy full system-added a ton of power but Muzzy says its only 5hp. Before,I had a stocker with a regular end cap and one that had the inner portion cut out. Both had the same power but the cut out one was louder. If you want more power, you have to change the whole system. It will cost you ~$500 no matter which brand you choose. With my Muzzy I went up 2 sizes on the main jet, still might raise the needle a notch but the front wheel comes up super easy. If the bike is 00-02, do the MCCT mod and loctite the primary nut on the ignition side.
If you're going to do the primary nut, it's damn smart to do the clutch/stator bolt loc-tite fixes too. Mine were loose, many many folks have done it and found their loose even on newer bikes with low miles. http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=697243&highlight=
What can I say, just get out there and ride it. My "03" S model is just about to turn over 40,000 trouble free miles.
