Got one of these plastic version protectors after I already scratched the FD on a simple tip over...the black plastic unit looks to have good scuff coverage, but I can't manage the install. I can't hold the inner metal anchor in place while installing the bolt. What's the secret?
I have the Hyde Racing protector, which seems to mount the same way as the Twalcom unit. It was a b&^$% to install. You have to get the rectangular nut in the slot, then turn it 90 degrees to get it into the position you want, and then pull down on the screw to hold the nut in position while you try to turn the screw... all while cursing and repeating the process multiple times as the nut slips out of position. Eventually you'll get lucky and it will stay where you want it. Having lots of beer handy helps, or at least helps ease the memory of just how irritating it was.
I can't see it but going by your description, could you put some sticky grease on the nut to hold it in place? or a dot of superglue (not a blob)
Yeah, I'm in that thread on post #20 asking more info on how folks installed. I might send some PMs to those that have...this install appears very awkward at best for something that will have to be removed each time for FD fluid change, etc...
