Leo Payne desgined the first "fuel" (nitromethane) specific carburetor which S&S Cycle produced in 1968. Leo drag raced and also ran the salt flats. Other great drag bike racers of that time were Joe Smith, TC Christensen, Borris Murry, Marion Owens, Larry Welch, Sonny Routt, Dick Prime, and many more.

Back in the day racers made their bikes from scratch. Very few production parts were made for drag racing. Only a few years later you could build a drag bike from a catalog. But back in the late 1960's and early 1970's those racers were building based on drag strip experimentation and learning along the way. We forget this with today's computer aided design measures. It was so much more challenging then. And they had real disadvantages when it came to technology. For example, traction. Nobody was making wide drag slicks for motorcycles so riders typically smoked the rear tire all the way down the track or got lucky and hooked up along the way netting a quicker ET or higher speed. Somewhere around 1973 or so came the advent of car tire bikes, slipper clutches, wheelie bars, and other things that would take the sport to another level.

Keep in mind that drag bikes are yet another form of the diverse sport of motorcycling! Whether drag racing, land speed record seeking, on the dirt, on the road, the dirt track, the road racing track, etc. its all motorcycling!

Thats just fucking it ! God damn I wish I grew up back then. I think what turns me off from modern racing [although I'm trying to get into it - it's like seafood ] is that everything is down to a formula, you know? Where's the fun in that? Really what modern racing seems to come down to [in my book] is who's got the fattest wallet.... and that's just lame.

....It seems like it used to be about who was more dedicated.


I love trial and error engineering and the resilience these guys had when something didn't work out. I love guys like Hobbit who have been racing the same damn bike and modding the same damn bike since 1965 ! The relationship between those two must be outstanding. I need to learn that kind of patience.


I don't know what sparked this resurgence of mine to get this thread going. I think I stumbled upon that first pic of the triumph with the blower and remembered how amazing these old ideas were.


... probably doesn't help that there's a drag strip <10mi from me I can't wait to run the BSA.

Holy heck, he's the guy who did some mods to my airhead racer frame. I'd forgotten his name until now.
He told me that on one of his drag bikes, the gears had been cut in such a way that if you backed off the throttle in second ( top ) gear it would throw it back into first and throw you off the bike!

This was owned by Zach Reynolds,he was the grandson of RJ Reynolds.He had RC Engineering build this in 1970.It cost $5,000 for the motor in 1970!
He use to race it at the cabbage patch in Daytona before those coniving cabbage salesmen moved in. He hated tobacco.He was killed in a plane crash in 81.He had a bunch of bikes.

I found this on EBAY a few years ago.It was run in 78 and 82 on the salt flats.

This is Ed LaBelle.he did a lot of racing in the 60's.This is one of the Vincents he drag raced.

EJ Potter, the Michigan Madman

Small block chevy in an Indian frame. He had direct drive to the rear wheel. Put it up on the center stand, rev the motor to 5 grand and push it off the stand.

His book, "Michigan Madman" is a great read.
