Meet at Yarra Glen in the park on the left on the way out at 9am for a 9.30 leave. Mix of dirt roads and tar. Morning tea (BYO stuff) at Cascades picnic ground in Murrindindi. From there there are 2 ways to Buxton. Depends on the weather and participants. One way ends up in Buxton via all dirt roads, other way about 15 k of tar along Maroondah hwy. Lunch at the meeting of the rivers picnic area out the back of Buxton. BYO lunch also, but as the shop is only 5 mins away, you can get something there and bring it to the picnic area. After lunch, up the road to Cathederal Ranges for a visit if time permits. Back through Marysville and Achereon Way. Ride to finish in Launching Place. All dirt roads, no tracks. Normal road tyres would make it a bit slippery at times, but that is up to you. Total distance about 200k. Petrol available at Buxton. I am sure I have forgotten something, so let me know.
@Hattah .... on a V-Strom normal road tyres are tourances or trailwings... hope that helps @ Squizz .. good work, sorry I cant be joining you as I'll be at work ... oh the joys of shift work I'll try and run one later in the year.. went over some great tracks last weekend
As far as tyres go, tourances seemed to get a bit slippery on the last ride in a few spots. Some guys were ok though. Autostream came with his 990 in motard trim and kept us all honest! I just wanted to point out although it is a snail trail ride, it is in winter, and we will be going on forest roads that can get a bit muddy sometimes. If people think these roads will not suit dual sport bikes, let me know and I will put it on later in the year.
bugger... beer day/night I'm in Sydney.. Snail trail weekend I'm in Gladstone... why no events in between have fun you guys.. sounds like a nice route
i'm just out of hospital with a bit of a scare but i've put the 28th down on the calendar Ian & looking forward to it! -nick
haha not that bad, i had a horrible pain near my heart and lost most of the feeling in my left arm last week, rushed to the hospital thinking i was going to have a stroke but it turns out i'd torn a muscle behind my rib cage which inflamed and pushed onto my heart and lung. not sure how i did it but feel better now, just keeping off the bike and avoiding heavy lifting, should be right by the end of the month though, the XR has hardly turned a wheel lately so I'm keen to get it dirty.
So, you have to sit to pee? Hmmm, I'd have been more heart attack-concerned than stroke-concerned - but yeah, a fair scare! Take it easy, with gentle exercise - lifting a stubbie several times a day should be a good start...
Hi guys, Just bought a Transalp, have no off-road experience and had my license a month ago (got a L!). I am really looking for a ride, meet and learn. But is this too hard for a beginner? Cheers, Thomas Rear tyre: trailwing 42 Front tyre: pirelli MT75 (that's for tar isn't it?)
Hi Thomas, this is a snail trail ride. It is not a fast ride and all the roads are gravel. They might get a bit churned up around some corners from logging trucks, but if you take your time you should be fine. That is not a great front tyre for dirt roads, but auto came on the last one with motard tyres and was fine. There are plenty of spots to go back along the tar if it all gets too much or if the weather is crap. Come along and enjoy the day. See you there. Dont forget to bring your morning tea and lunch.
don't worry Thom there'll be plenty of beginners (myself included), that's the whole idea of the Snail Trail rides, you ride at your own pace, there's no shame in falling over, no one leaves anyone behind and ego's are left at home. I'm on an XR250R which wont be setting any land speed records. i'll be putting the nobbies and and fingers crossed we'll see some soft earth.
