Old Highway 30

Must off to to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1lace><st1:City>Twin Falls</st1:City>, <st1:State>Idaho</st1:State></st1lace> this week. I’ve gotten me an old 1938 road map and will endeavor to take old US Route 30, which I will pick up outside <st1:City><st1lace>Caldwell</st1lace></st1:City> where the road is conveniently named Old Highway 30. Roads grow, are semi organic, so I will attempt to find the oldest incarnations where 30 came into existence with the hobbling together of existing routes.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

30 used to cross the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1lace><st1laceName>Boise</st1laceName> <st1laceType>River</st1laceType></st1lace> on this bridge.

Seems this bridge was built long before US 30.

An older map shows 30 used old State 65's route to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>Boise</st1lace></st1:City>.

A stone close by the road shows old 65 here used the route of the oldest road in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:State><st1lace>Idaho</st1lace></st1:State>.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

The oldest road map of the area shows <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>Fremont</st1lace></st1:City> used this ford as did the Indians before him. Geography dictates much when routing roads and old highway 30 passes close to or through all four of the <st1:City><st1lace>Fremont</st1lace></st1:City> expedition’s campsites between here and <st1:City><st1lace>Twin Falls</st1lace></st1:City>. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Old 30 has vanished under newer, wider asphalt to <st1:City><st1lace>Boise</st1lace></st1:City> and out. I will pick it up about 10 miles out of <st1:City><st1lace>Boise</st1lace></st1:City> and watch for artifacts of it’s passing to confirm my way.<o></o>

The old highway goes by many road names and is often cut by the interstate but one can ride her all the way to Twin.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
