The wife got some groupon deal in idyllwild this weekend and we are taking the GS. Are there any good sight seeing fire roads up there? I've been looking around and there are certainly lots of dirt roads up there but I dont really fancy taking the GS into some gnarly stuff with the wife on the back.... she's not into it....

    :lol3

    anyways....

Rouse Hill Rd over to Bautista Canyon Rd off the 74 towards Hemet.
Bautista Canyon is a wide open, flat, well graded dirt road.

Here's an easy loop without Rouse Hill Rd. http://goo.gl/maps/QwYPx
You can check it out and explore side roads from there.

Bee Canyon Truck Trail, the back way to Idyllwild from the 74 by Hemet, is a bit steeper but nothing gnarly. There is a whole network of forest roads out that way...

Alternately, the 243 down the hill towards Banning is a great road ride.

Hard to go too far wrong in that area. :thumb

Edit: The Google street view camera car turned around on Bautista Canyon right where it turns into dirt :lol3

CA Stu has got about everything covered.

Watch out in on some of the back roads heading to Poppet Flats/Soboba area. The Indians tend to shoot first and don't bother with the questions.

heh we didnt have problems with any of the locals...

    :lol3

we did have a nice afternoon ride down Bautista. Talk about graded man the road was FLAT. super easy, nice sightseeing ride. Just enough for me and the wife to have a taste of off road for the after noon then back up into the hills. Talk about warm though - easily over 80, then cold, then hot again. must be California!

    :dunno

    thanks for the tip, Stu!
