tach/bucket
The guts of the speedo that came with the bucket was junked and I put a /7 electric tach in the housing.
Printed the face plate myself to match the spacing of the /7 tach but with a vintage look. Bucket is from E bay, maybe $75 for it with the light and instrument. A standard 7" halogen headlight fits so the size is bigger than the /5 light. Airbear, I think he's Airbear on this forum too, has the same type bucket on his but with an Acewell speedo unit. Edit - Charlie is "Brun" on this forum, here's his... ![]() http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...hlight=ACEWell More ideas here pkboxer screwed with this post 09-20-2012 at 01:34 PM |

I am so excited I might pee: is the /7 tach what is actually calculating the speed for the speedometer? I ask because I do not see a tach in your photo. The bucket you purchased--not from an Airhead, I take it. Any idea what kind? I love that you opened it up and put a new face on it. You must be one of those "weird airhead guys" too. gasolinePony screwed with this post 09-20-2012 at 02:39 PM |

No speedo
It was so slow developing it wasn't much of a build more a progression.
Fitting everything into the bucket and making it "neat" on the inside were the hardest parts. The wires are color coded and match the colors on the junction board but I still documented the dismantling of it. No speedometer, just a tach. Sometimes use a GPS Speedo on trips, mostly just ride with the flow of traffic. Think the search was "ural headlight" or "russian headlight" or the like. |

For those wanting something like a /5 bucket, there is this from a ChangJiang 750. The bucket is quite deep, so you need to organise some longer ears. The speedo hole is 85mm (3 3/4") diameter.
![]() I made some s/s ears and have since painted the chrome rim black. ![]() Google 'CJ750 parts'. There is also a version without the 'eyebrow'. They are about $65 for a complete headlight, including the ignition switch. The headlight itself is pretty ordinary but easy to replace with a sealed beam unit. The ignition switch includes a spring-loaded starter, and works very well. I fitted an Acewell in a fabricated adaptor plate and I'm happy enough with it, but that 85mm hole will take one of these GPS speedos - available in metric or imperial, with choice of face colours. Google 'Speedhut'

I'm thinking of tearing apart the stock /6 tach, and putting those guts in a new, or at least more attractive housing from another speedometer. hmmmm. If anybody else has done this type of thing, show it!

New fiberglass option
I believe this is fiberglass. Cheaper than rehabbing something old...
http://www.legendary-motorcycles.com/miscparts.html 2nd item down. They have a speedo or tach you can use too. |
