I accidently overfilled my 990 with oil, not too much, its just a bit over the maximum on the dipstick, or whatever you call it in english.

I feel stupid enough allready, so there is no need to tell me off. But I was wondering if there is any way to get some oil out without having to drain the whole engine.

    Thx.

It's not a big deal. The only problem is it will burn some as it may overflow from the breather in the intake ports. It's easy to take some oil out from the same place you put it in with a syringe a little extension hose.

Ok thx, I didn't think it would be a problem, but was just checking to make sure. Concidering how much oil it burns it should go pretty quick.

And I did think about taking some out with a pipet, or something similar. Only I don't have one. :-)

Did you fill it up above max when cold?

As I have heard form every KTM mechanic I've been in touch with is that you fill it to about middle between min and max och the stick when cold and then when warm it should hit about spot on max.

Please correct me if I'm wrong since there is alot of knowledge in this corner of the web. :)

That might be one reason why you think your bike is burning oil...

For my part I can have a cold engine and the oil is just visible on the stick and after it get warm it's a bit more then halfway up the stick.

    Just for your information...

    Cheers,
    Zappa

The engine was cooling down when I filled it. KTM mechanic told me to let the engine cool down for about ten minutes before checking the oil.

It does worry me a bit that it burns so much oil though.
    What is concidered normal for a 2006 990 with 57000 km's?

I own the bike since a few (winter)months, and did about 2000km with it. My estimate is it burns half a litre per 1000 km.

You can get a syringe from any pharmacy or from a doctor in your medical centre and thin hose cut to the lenght you need from any aquatic shop.

I am pretty sure you are supposed to check the oil right after a ride.
Page 153 on owners manual says to run the engine until six bars show up right before checking the oil level.

I'd say, its way too much, except if you're doing contantly over 8k rpms.

My 08 has 53.000kms and i could say it burns next to nothing. Usually when changing, try to remove as much as possible, that includes, leaning the bike over a few times, so it get out as much as possible throught the drain in the sump and through the oil filter cover. Then fill her up with 2,5L (after replacing filters), go for a small ride, about 10kms, stop at 5K check oil level and continue. When arrive it is at minimum level, add 0,5L and its good to go for another 7.500kms.

How are the plugs and exhaust ends?

I use my wife's flavor injector when I overfill the tank. :rofl I haven't done that in a while, so I haven't heard, "What's that funny flavor in the turkey" for some time. :dunno

The idea is that you check your oil after the engine has warmed up. It's easiest do to that just by taking a short ride. But you need to let the oil in the tank settle three minutes after you've ridden. You need to let the bubbles in the oil settle down. Remember that the engine has a pump that sucks the oil out of the bottom of the engine and blows it up into the tank. The oil gets a little foamy in the process.

Haven't checked the plugs yet. Exhaust ends are a bit greasy but not more then I would expect from an exhaust. There is no blue smoke indicating burnt oil either. Nor any burnt oil smell.

The bike needs maintenance soon, will go to official KTM dealer and let them check it out. Too much of a noob to start playing with engine stuff...

    Google is our firend.

If you say it's greasy than there's oil being burned. Either rings, gaskets or valve seals. next service have your mechanic see it.

Maybe some model year differences here, from 06 Owners Manual, Page 75

    "Checking the engine oil level
Check the engine oil level when the engine is warm (at least 4 bars on the temperature indicator
light up). Allow the warm engine to run idle for approx. 1 minute and motorcycle place
the motorcycle on a level surface (not on the side stand).
Turn off the engine, unscrew the oil dipstick [5] and wipe off with a cloth. Screw the oil dipstick
all the way back in and back out again"

The later model temperature gauges go to 11 bars not 7 like the original ones (so six is normal running).

I used the pump from my wife's shampoo bottle when I overfilled a bit. Couldn't have worked better.
