Quote of Joan Barreda: "I got lost at the beginning of the stage. But I wasn't the only one who needed some time to find his bearings. I quickly got back on track and everything went smoothly from then on. It was a great day at the office."

Quote of Matt Fish: "This result isn't really a surprise because our team does its best so we can pull out all the stops, as I did today. We went flat out from the start and it's already paid dividends! I hope we can keep it up."

Confirmed with Mrs. Muggleton that he is out, sore, but OK and that all that mattered is that he came home safe.

As far as I understand the Despres Redbull / Coma AMVMRW / KTM Motorsports thing is a sort of Holy Trinity (where the Holy Spirit fights Christ for a Dakar win - not the best analogy, never mind) ... anyway they are all KTM but they work separately. I don't believe they would mix the teams structures, namely by changing the top rider's watercarrier at this point and only based on todays early results (by which, Pedrero is immediately behind Faria in the overall).

What I haven't figured out for sure yet is if there was a pecking order between Juan Pedrero and Kurt Caselli, I believe that there was and Juan was already the first rider, Caselli being the rookie. Today's overall will consolidate that anyway.

Jorge Aguilar, motorcycle rider from El Salvador #159, just gave a super excited interview on Fox Sports. He was animated and just thrilled to be there representing his country at the Dakar.

It was cool listening to his passion. :D

Chavo is in 1h42'51" behind the lead. He'll be very disappointed with that result.

Pedrero was very cautious in his word selection in the Dakar pre show on RTVE. The announcers kept trying to pin him down on his strategy, but he would not give an inch.

I wasn't sure whether I was seeing some internal struggle with his sponsors, or whether Joan is just normally very circumspect.
