The docking unit with my BMW Navigator IV does not include documentation for the wiring / connectors. I have emailed Garmin, but they say this is a BMW product and they can not help me. I am trying to connect it to my 2007 BMW F650 Dakar. The harness that came in with the unit was the older Navigator III. Anyone have a schematic or documentation? J2 pin 1 appears to be ground connected to B2, B6, B8, A2, A8 J1 pin 1 appears to be connected to A5 J1 pin 2 appears to be connected to B4 TIA, Old Penguin BMW K75S 1988 BMW F650 Dakar 2007 Suzuki DRZ400E
OP... did you get this sorted out? Are you just looking to power the Nav, or do you want to hard-wire audio out, as well? Ji is mono audio out for turn-by-turn only. It is intended to plug into a mating connector on a bike with a factory audio system, like a R1200RT ** Note corrected Pinout: ** J2 Pin 1 - GROUND J2 Pin 2 - sense (Canbus, not needed) J2 Pin3 - +12V You could connect into this wire with Posi-taps, or purchase a mating connector from BMW, part number 80 00 0 611 656. On account of the cradle, it's not possible to get Stereo audio out of the Nav IV, except by Bluetooth. You could, I am confident, get a Zumo 660 cradle. You will lose the side buttons, but the 660 cradle has proper audio-in, audio-out and power connections on a long fly-lead.
Since I needed mounts for 2 of my bikes, I got one of the Garmin Zumo 660 cradles and got it working with this. Thanks for the information on the mating connector from BMW. This is the information I was seeking. It would be nice to use the supplied connector, I realize I could have just cut it off and re-terminated it. Regards, Old Penguin
I am trying to hook up a second cradle for a Nav II and my plug looks the same. On my harness, J2-pin 1 is black, J2-pin 2 is white, and J2-pin 3 is red. Are you saying the black wire is power and the red wire is ground? Color coding seems backwards to me. Hmmm. I sure don't want to hook it up reverse polarity.
The Navigator IV appears to have reverse polarity protection. Also the Garmin Zumo 660 cradle had the industry norm of Black for return and Red for hot. Old Penguin
Sorry folks... too many late nights :eek1 I corrected the pin designations, above, but to re-clarify - the correct Pinout is: PIN 1 = GROUND PIN 2 = SENSE (not needed) PIN 3 = +12 Volts
hi all I thought I would bring this thread back up and see if anyone had any ideas. I have a 2012GS and the IV mount and cable which looks identical to the one in the pics at the start of this thread. The thre pin connector went straight to the one already on the bike and the other one went no ware as there is no audio system on the GS. I have wanted to get the audio out to connect it to a headset. or Sena SR10. basically I need to get it into a typical mono phono connector. I don't want to use the Bluetooth for this. beacouse I am running out of channels to connect bluteooth and I was going to pipe it over the recieve feede from my 2-way radio which should be easy. of course no I am thinking of getting a Sena SR10 to make it a bit more mobile. either way I need to make a cable that get's it hands on this audio out. I would like to just get the other end of the 2-pin connector and solder it to a female phono connector. I can do the soldering but I have no idea where to source the audio connector that mates to the harness. TIA Dwayne
Another revive - does anyone know the pinouts of the 18 gold pins and where I might find the connector that plugs into them? I know it's a long shot but thought Id ask
Maybe a dumb question, but what is the two pin plug for? I have a nav V hooked up to my GS with just the 3 pole pin and everything works, even the wheel remote.
This is an old thread, I know, but I thought I'd put in a potentially useful data point: I'm in the reverse situation: I have a Nav IV that was hard-plugged into a 2012 GS. The GS went bye-bye, but the GPS and cradle stayed with me. I want to wire it up to another motorcycle without cutting the factory plug off. It appears that the female (wiring harness side) connector is available as a replacement part as well, BMW PN 83 30 0 413 586. That can be soldered to hot/ground leads from the new motorcycle, and then the BMW cradle can be plugged into that. So goes the plan. I have the connector on the way and will report back.
Well, I can report that the wiring connector I mentioned works perfectly. As it turns out, the dealer had one, and I picked it up today. You have to sort out polarity on your own, as the leads from the connector are all yellow, with no banding to indicate which was which. No worries, it's easy. You can see the lead color on the Nav IV harness: Black, Red, Purple. Don't know what the function of the purple lead is; some of the diagrams I found for either side (of the connector) indicated it was unused. I wrapped that lead together and tucked it away in some shrink tubing. The supplied leads are pretty long, so you should have no difficulty reaching your power source, and getting the new power to the Nav plug. Lemme know if you have any questions; I did take a couple pix of the way I did things (wiring to the factory lead for GPS power on a Ducati Multistrada 1200), but don't have them edited or hosted. Hope the confirmation is useful.
Sorry; didn't see this until today. For some reason I think Garmin specifies 2.5A, but I don't know that for certain. It makes sense though; the draw is 15W max, 12V = 1.25A. Okay, I dug around some more and find that they spec a 3A fast-blow fuse. HTH
Hi Old Penguin: Have you been able to figure out where to connect the 4 button cradle? I have a R1200GS and my dealer doesn't know how to do it. Any direction you can point me will help. Thanks Migs
You may have to pm him... this is an old thread. FWIW: My 09 GSA had the connecter ready for the Nav... not sure about the GS models. Recently, I took the cradle off the GSA and installed it on my my 650gs Sertao. The pigtail worked fine that I got from BMW. Pretty easy to install with a garmin mount and wired directly to my battery.
Thank you GrizzLee. I'm having a dismal time trying to get the 4 button cradle and the Nav V! to work together. I simply cannot find where to connect the data cable lead to the bike. Thus the joystick wheel on the left handlebar is useless. This is a post I put up a few days ago on this forum but received no reply. If anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated: " Friends: If anyone has installed the 4 Button GPS Cradle that is used with the Navigator VI on this bike I'd love to see where you plugged in the two plugs emanating from the cradle. The bike is an E series K50, 2013 Model R1200GS, Series R, Production Date 2012-12-19. I can find a place to plug in the lead that supplies power to the cradle so the GPS works, but it is the other lead I can't find where to plug into the motorcycle. Specifically where to connect to the bike so that the handlebar multi controller (chapter 8 pg 138 of manual) can be used with the GPS. My bike came fitted with an earlier BMW cradle/gps and I decided to upgrade to the BMW Motorrad Nav VI, and the "X272A Factory Preparations for GPS Unit" was part of the original bike specifications. (Don't know if this last information helps) Thanks for your help amigos, Migs"
