The 2.11 gal tank is absurd for enduro riding/racing. Any recommendations? I'd like a 4 gal. Thanks!!
The MXC tank is 3.4-5g but adds about 2-3 inches at the rads, the 6.6 KTM/Acerbis is what I have on my EXC but it is a street/adv bike, forget serious off road as it splays your legs way out unless you are on the rear fender. I'd go IMS for thin and higher capacity for off road use. If you are going to sell the stocker let me know, my brother needs one for MX. Thanks and good luck, Jim.
which isn't much...I have the IMS 3.1 which advantage is that it carrys the fuel a little lower than the Clark 3.1 but the IMS does not (without a heatgun modification) allow the use of an electric fan which the Clark does...I think the Clark is a little less money too ($180 vs $199) I'm getting about 120 miles to the tank at trail riding speed and 85-95 at race pace (like I know what that really is...so I should say MY race pace) with the 3.1 You may not need the bigger tank if that's enough range.
Make sure the IMS clears the fan. Can't remember if those or the Clarkes fouled the fan, or even if it's applicable with either anymore, but worth asking about or looking into beforehand as it does seem to ring a bell. I run KTM's MXC (current XC) 13 liter, 3.4 gal. tank/seat for dual-sport. Clears the fan, no concerns at all with the small amount of extra width at the rads, and it better protects them. Wish it was available in natural/clear, though.
I bought the IMS and, while the fit and finish is great, I am very disappointed at the amount of airflow it restricts and that it will not clear the accessory fan. I would not buy again.
The Clarke 3.2 tank will fit the 525 with a fan, but you will need to order the tank that dose allow for the fan. I have one on my 525 and it fit just fine. http://www.cyclebuy.com/shopping/gas_tanks/ktm_mc.htm
Sorry I recommended the IMS, I was not aware of the fan issues. I had 2 tanks on past KTMs and was impressed with the quality of fit & finish but didn't have a fan on either bike. Good luck, Jim.
The Cyclebuy.com guys are a good bunch. They're experienced at DS and motard conversions, and close to me
You see...you didn't read my post now did ya I'm going to wait till summer to see how the bike runs then, but I'm in the Desert and ride on Hot days and more than likely need the fan so I'll probably have to go to the Clark as well.
I have the fan on my 520 with the 6.6g tank, if the IMS carries the fuel lower I would be inclined to add a different fan, I recall old computer cooling fans can be fitted easily and are cheap and smaller/lighter than the factory kit. Guys use a switch or the thermo unit from the KTM kit to trigger them. Around $12 new at electronics supply, radio shack or similar, hobby stores also, IIRC, free if you find an old computer in the trash, just a thought. Better weight distribution is a pretty strong factor, my 07 sxf250 with fuel stored underseat flicks around much easier than my older front tank SX ever did. Jim.
I have the IMS 3.1 but when I filled it after mounting it on the bike it took 2.85 gals. I called IMS and they said that the moulding process makes each tank a little different. You can also add the Baja Designs rear tank that holds 1.5 gals it mounts in place of the side cover. You can also do the hot water compressed air trick to expand you capacity of the tank.
3 GAL should be enough for 125+ miles..most of the enduros I run are 100 and have a fuel stop about halfway which is fine.
Safari Fuel Tanks sells a 23 liter (approx 6 gallons) and a 15 liter (approx 4 gallons) http://www.safaritanks.com.au/ Check them out
got the KTM OEM 13lts MXC tank. only mounted when going to Morocco. yesterday i installed this graphics
I have the KTM XC tank on my 525EXC - 3.5 gal or close to it. It also requires a different seat. The fit is perfect and the gas is low. It is not noticably wider then the stock and it looks better then the IMS or Clarke IMO. The fan fits, too!
yes, i have mounted also specific seat that covers the gap that shrouds leave when removed to place 13 lts tank.
