One of my favourite Rallys when it's at the Brindy site, preferred the Perkins Flat site [pre '83?] better but like everything - we've been locked out! :eek1

if you want it warmer, but still want to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow m/cyclists then you are welcome to try FARINA(SA RANGERS RALLY) in the north of SA. Not taking anything away from the Alpine rally, its a great rally, just want you to know your choices. All monies raise at FARINA go to the GUIDE DOGS ASS. All the best BEETLE.

Perkins Flat was up to 1993. My first Alpine was that year.

I'm tossing up whether to go. I doubt my Speed triple will get up there? And am not sure my 525 will make the trip from Newcastle & back.

Plenty of 'roadies' get in & out of there - no problems if you take it with a commonsense approach :rofl

Lol yeah that was my little adventure on the Hornet - I learnt that road tyres and wet clay don't mix - even at 10km/h hahaha The only other tricky bit I came across was some deep ball bearing gravel but I made it through by taking it easy.

Wet clay & most tyres don't go together real well, reckon oil on ice would be easier to get traction on!!! :lol3

Believe it or not, road tyres work better on this stuff than knobbies!, more rubber contact - better traction

    Yeah?
I think you may find many knobby users who might disagree!

    Re original post, of who's going;
    I am.
Starting from Albury/Wodonga area and probably leaving the Thursday before, and heading to Orange (NSW), to meet up with a couple of riders heading south to it; as I am interested in other dirt roads that I have not been on for a while.
The southern approaches are starting to get a bit same old, same old, now for me, even though I went south to Mansfield one time to meet a Melbourne rider and then double-back to it...

Happy to have others tag along for the 'long way there' ride, though if no-one contacts me solo is ok too, ... as most of my rides are in the latter category.

Do a trip down through Tuena to Yass, once you get to Binda turn right @ the shop - that takes you through Lost River Rd., head to Yass [if you got a GPS - it's easy] via Bully's Crossing or Bevendale, then out Wee Jasper Rd., left @ Mountain Creek Rd., follow that all the way through, brings ya out onto Urriara Rd., turn right @ T intersection, head South west - turns into Brindabella Rd., signposted fairly well @ that stage, :clap
See ya there, have a yarn & a beverage or two:freaky

    G'day Guys

I'm looking at coming up to the Alpine via Long Flat and Crace Roads but my topo map dated 28/3/2011 shows a couple of locked gates just north of Perkins Flat. Are they truly locked and should I be worried? Or can I just ride around them?

I remember my first Alpine was in '92 at Perkins Flat and I don't recall any locked gates back then.

Bloody UN and their Agenda 21 in action already by the looks of it :baldy

Thanks for the quick reply Baza!

What's the go there? I thought the whole area was National Park / State Forests?

Can you suggest an alternative interesting route?

tHE STORY GOES, THAT THE COUNCIL WOULDN'T DO SUFFICIENT MAINTENANCE ON THE ROAD, AND THE PROPERTY HOLDERS BECAME AWARE THAT THEY MAY BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE ROAD CONDITION, SO THEY JUST CLOSED IT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES. tHE ROOT CAUSE WOULD SEEM TO BE COUNCIL, BEING RECALCITRANT ABOUT IT.

Sorry about the caps lock. I'm not typing it again though.

My understanding was that the actual road did not go where the surveys said it should, so it actually was on private property. Nobody wanted to pay to fix this oversight, so the road was closed where it was on private property. But I've been known to be wrong.

That's right Woody, it went over private property. The landowners were OK with it, but as it got busier they didn't see why they should have to maintain it for the public and asked the council to do it, then public liability reared it's ugly head and they had to close it, mainly in self-protection.

Say G'day to Henning for me (we've been criss-crossing the same continent, but failing to meet up).... and I just bumped into a mate of his (Muen) in northern Laos. Small world eh?

I'll miss it this year due to major family reunion.
