TE-610: mods to prevent water injestion?

Hey all- I'm still in the process of getting my 2009 TE-610 all setup. I've installed a Leo Vince muffler, and powerup kit and LOVE how this bike runs now. I also have Kenda K270s, a Hyde racing skid plate, grip heaters, and the flat top Ranger Dirt-Bagz on order. Things are shaping up!

One of the things I keep reading about is the low air intake ports on the side of the airbox. I know at least one guy has sucked in water and bent a rod because of this

I'm thinking of minimally invasive mods to prevent this kind of issue during a water crossing. My idea is to make a kydex panel that would mount over the side panel (with generous vent) forming a raised intake. Air would go straight down the duct, and right into the existing "too low to be safe" ports.

Anyone else done a mod to prevent water injestion? Please share!

Pull your rear fender cover. You will see that there is yet one more opening for the airbox there.

Realistically, until you get water up so high that the uppermost opening is restricted, the water should not make it past the oiled filter; water is 800 times more dense than air, and it's the air that will be much more easily pulled into the throttle body, as long as there is an available path for that air.
