For those of you purists, please find your way back out of this thread. What you see here will only cause you pain, sorrow, and indigestion. For if you were to go any further you'd pass into the dark side ... "Abandon all hope yea who enter here." - Dante I know that I am not responsible enough to own a mint condition, factory specimen of anything. I will destroy, modify, and play whimsical sorcery with just about anything that I can get away with. Trolling Craigs I found a little gem in Pensacola, FL. Two airheads rotting away in the back of an airplane hanger. I made contact, a deal was made, a U-Haul was rented, and off we went for the 10 hour round trip to the gulf coast. The PO was enthusiastic to see us. He opened the hanger to reveal an absolutely mint condition 1946 Landsdown Crop duster. The leather on the inside was perfect. This specimen was clearly here to divert our attention from the mounds of crap piled up against the walls of the hanger. Clothes, Tools, Signs, trash, records, spare parts from who knows what ... and books ... lots of books ... just crap everywhere. But there in the corner ... the unmistakable shapes of a Vetter faring and an RT ... It took three of us the better part of an hour to dig them out. The Vetter Faring was attached to a 74 R90/6 ... the unmistakable solid rotor and small axel, and /5 trimmings. But it was beyond hope. The salt air had long destroyed the polymer, seat, and other fragile parts. He thought it had been sitting there for 20 years. Digging out the other ... I saw a monolever swingarm. That's promising. This one was no where near cranking ... and appeared to be missing a significant number of parts. Front cover, starter cover, battery tray, side panels, faring lowers ... it really looked like it had had a 'problem', someone had taken it apart and lost interest. I pointed out these things ... and the fact that I had come expecting two 'complete' bikes ... and we renegotiated ... Another modified deal was made ... with the promise that if he could find the parts ... I would pay him the rest of the money. That's fair. But the good news is that I was leaving with my donor bike. More to come.
I have neither the self control or the bank account required to own a factory fresh specimen. I want something that I can enjoy without guilt. I think you found it. Now find me a deal like this Good luck with your project. Mike
After doing a little research ... Fact 1 : The DR650 front forks are a bolt on swap for BMW forks. Fact 2 : In 'Thumpers' there are many threads about DRZ400 forks being a great upgrade and easy swap for DR650 forks. Communitve property of addition states if A = B, and B = C, then A = C.
annony - The budget is whatever I can part out the R90 for, minus cost of both bikes. I really got both bikes for a GREAT deal. So let's say I have ~50% of the /6 and I'm in the black a bit. Lornce - It belonged to an 83 R80 that became parts for my uncles two R80's and my R100. I'm thinking about making a chandelier from the frame ... No title ... painful.
Tank from an oilhead GS, looks so good to me. I'm the tank donor to the owner of this aihead (Claude, member here). As you can see (sub-frame and LL), this is a sidecar project. Good luck with this interesting GSification, cannot wait to see the final result.

We are not patient people. Let's get on with it. Give us the good stuff such as: What former road sign will you cut up for use as a bash plate? By how much will you lengthen the swingarm? What rear gearing will you be changing to? Where's the enduro bars? You using PivotPegz? You rerouting the exhaust over the rear tire? What kinds of hardened mounts and bags can we expect to see? What will you do to beef up the frame and rear subframe? What's the most badass knobby you could possibly mount? You going tubeless? When do you redo all the electrical connections to make them less prone to vibration failure and water damage? Where's the handguards? Love this project, I do.
I cut & pasted half that post to my To Do list I've still got that Sito single-sided exhaust and 2 sets of offroad footpegs if you want to do some parts swapping, Fred
Question: What would happen if I sealed one side of a double sidded exhaust collector ... and just ran one muffler?
WHAAAAT? You must tell me how to do this. How do you seal the fuel pump hole, how do you install a petcock....how how how
Begins to look like a CS thing... is this one getting hacked? Holy crap, Carmel, I'm about 45 min from you. . Interesting call on the DRZ forks, Beater. Curious to see how that works out... CAnt wait to watch this I believe constricting one side of a dual sided collector would be a ... constriction? But maybe while youre constricting, you could stick an outlet tube thats twice the area... does that make sense? I think the R100 collector is a bigger tube size than the R80. Unconstrict the outlet and run one sided without concern, apart from rear silencer size... I'm a little loopy, sorry.
OK ... so let the bleeding begin. It was time to see what was needed and what needed repair. Since I had an 83 R80 parts bike I was able to get things like covers, airbox ... and transmission. The drive shaft was super notchy ... I located one in West Georgia for $80. Drove out there on 1/30 to get it. So we need to get some of the parts out in other peoples hands in order to finance the rest of this ... So ... here we go. I think we should invite others over to enjoy it. Start: Jenna and Brad getting dirty: The resulting hulk: The existing clutch was stuck ... I had a clutch from the 83 R80 ... and it looked great ... so we went ahead and did the install: Now ... I really need advice on taking apart a drive shaft. David Woodburn in West Ga gave me an overview ... so ... Looks like I'm going to have to make a couple of tools! PS - Anyone need a Monolever RT faring?
I hate to be boring... but why would you want to hang that thing on an airhead? Last I checked the fuel tank on my 1150GS held about 22 liters, which was woefully inadequate.
I was laughing until I rode a R90/6 with a similar fairing. What a treat on a 60 mph smooth road without wind.
