G'day Ray,
i was thinking the same thing the other day. why pay $100,000 to race Dakar with no guarentee of finishing the race when i'm sure for the same money (or less) you could find a tour operator to run a similar route at a much more relaxed pace.
i'm sure with a support vehicle you would be able to do it on enduro bikes with big tanks (15+ litres) with 2 guides and no pressure!!
would be good to do it with 8 to 10 mates. i'm not taking the Big though. i'll take my KTM

by the way, this is just a dream. i don't have the sort of cash to go tearing around south american sand dunes.

To all. I have my DR750 running well now after cleaning the carbs and changing various jets and needles. It will now start at the push of a button in sub zero weather. At this point my bike has about 27,xxx kilometres on it. The only item that needs attention is the beak which has a crack where it attaches to the upper portion of the fairing. THE QUESTION IS...to those who have modified the BIG...what modifications would do, if you were doing it again? I'm looking for a list to consider moving forward. Appreciate everyones input.

4. Cut out aitfilter cover
5. Rejetting
6. DIY or aftermarket aluminium sump guard
7. DYI crash bars
8. Second set of wheels - supermoto size 17" with sticky tyres.
9. Aftermarket handlebar
10. LED rear light
12. DYI or Hessler rear chain guide based upon RMZ450 block
13. Chain deflector on upper side of swingarm to avoid chain hitting wall of supermoto tyre.
14. Chain oiler (PDO in my case)
15. SW Motech small tank bag attaching to ring on tank filler cap.
16. Wide footpegs
17. DYI panniers carrier
18. Lars (Resi) idle adjuster screw
19. Tool tube on rhs rear
20. SW motech or any hand guards with aluminium bar.
21. LED aux lights from Vendor's section on ADV

In any case worst parts of DR is exhaust, front brake, forks and shock.
All above is IMO based on about 60 000 km done with my ever modified DR that is sold now :)

I am planning to order a small quantity of 106mm forged pistons from a well-known manufacturer in the USA.
As you all know DR Big standard bore is 105mm.
First oversize 105.5mm piston is available from Suzuki dealers around the world as far as I know.
Next oversize 106mm is discontinued everywhere.

106mm is official oversize for Suzuki so it should work without major modifications except boring and honing the cylinder of course.
The piston will be similar to original, i.e. flat top.

Minimum quantity I can order is 4 pieces. Any of you interested, too?
I expect the price to be around the same as OEM, ca 200.- euros per unit + shipping. Maybe even less. That includes piston, rings, pins and clips. I do not have exact quotation from the manufacturer before I've sent them a sample piston.
Production time will be ca 5 weeks + I have to ship them sample that will take another week maybe.

Any thoughts, comments, questions, interest?
I just need 1 or maximum 2 pistons for myself, so 2-3 will be available.

Anyone know where I can get Seal that goes with the head stock bearings. I can't find a part number for it and I can't find a picture to source just the seal. I have new bearings but no new seal. Thanks for your help. Rob

Sounds promising. Will they also supply good quality piston rings? It seems the rings are more difficult to source than the pistons.

Are you sending a SR41 piston or a SR43 piston for a sample. Unless I'm mistaken the SR43 piston has small valve recesses cast or machined into the piston crown to make extra room for the valves due to the SR43 longer stroke. I'd expect the SR43 piston could be used in the SR41 (with maybe a very slight reduction in compression ratio) but not the reverse due to possible valve contact.

What company are you using?

They will supply the rings but I don't have the specs for the rings yet.

I can send them SR42 piston as a sample. SR42 has the same stroke as SR43 but still has completely flat top piston like SR41. I think there was some difference in camshaft of SR43, have to check. For sure there's a reason for recesses in the piston of SR43.

I have spoken to 3 companies - JE, Ross, and BRC pistons. They have all given the same price range.

It is still in the planning stadium. I don't have the funds to buy 4 pistons for myself so if there will be not enough interest I will go for plan B

try ebay Pyramid spares, and Wemoto engand.
