It looks like my 950 adv is sold. I am new to the thumpers side af adv so the uestions i am about to ask have been asked before. I have searched but and looked at the faq. I just need some quick advice on the years of 640 adv. 1- what are the year breaks from 00 to 07 or are they all the same basic bike? 2- do the older bikes vibrate more.? 3- what are the known defects in the 640 adv. problems areas to look at on a used bike.? I am hopeing to get a 05 or newer but if the 07 are the same as the 03 i would start looking for a 03 to 07. THanks alot if you can answer any of these ?
I got 2000 and it runs just fine. Low mileage bikes available . So, expand your horizon. They all pretty much the same in my opinion.
by "faq" do you mean the index thread? because it contains this: Up-to-date: KTM 640 LC4 Adventure changes between model years and more...
thanks alot meat. i looked in the index but my wife says i cant find anything. I think i should stick with 03 or newer.
Can't or won't? 03 is a good year, 04- are good too, 00-02 are even good. Things get different pre-2000, but you know this looking at that thread from the index and some of the picture threads on LC4s.
Coming off an 04 950S with over 72,000kms (mostly dirt) & went for an 03 640Adv. Just drove it 350kms home, yesterday; I like it & the infamous vibes are no way near what I was expecting (not a problem for me) but it does lack in the ''power'' departement compared to the 950 & a 6th gear would be nice. I went with an 03 for the shaft bearing thing, ''hiflow'' heads, 48mm forks & price; now it's ''FCR'' 41 carb, Pipe, smaller tank, suspension tweaking & general litening of the bike time ...Should be a Hoot.
Did you ever consider getting an SXC As for the 640, don't bother looking for a US 2004, apart from that what Meat said above is correct. Not sure I'd want to sell my 950.
SXC would of been my choice but they can't be street plated in Québec; Adventures & SMCs lc4s only, dam'it. Any leads on a FCR41 lying around out there? (Already have the oil in frame & cush hub! )
why would i want a xsc for not much more money i could have a 690 enduro but no tank options. I want a 640 adventure and i am buying a 05 in mass.
My mistake sorry. I am sure i am going to miss my 950, but i think a 640 will fit my rideing better. And if i miss it too much i can allways buy another. My 950 held it value well for the short time i owned it. A hell of alot better than the klr i owned for a year and 5000 miles.
I believe the '04 and '05 model 640 Adv.'s had an extra oil line plumbed in at the front base of the cylinder block to lubricate the skirt of the piston. Like most off-road bikes, check every nut and bolt (loctite the fuggers too!) accessible on the 640 Adv. as they do loosen with time, especially the engine mounts (lower front) and the sub-frame assembly bolts (the lower mounting, rear foot pegs and upper). Keeping the valve clearances correctly adjusted and the engine in tune will help with the vibes. Correct chain tension also mandatory on these weapons. Too many good tips in the bible of the 640A, as Preacher Meat spoketh about so heed to mass and godspeed Grasshopper!
Congradts, the 640 is a sweet bike!! A couple of things to check when you get some miles on it. 1. Of course the rims, if they last that long 2. The cylhead leaking oil, very common. 3. Rocker arms rollers exploding(falling apart) 4. starter clutch issues. But remember this is just for hard ridden high mile 640's. I believe they are a pretty darn good bike. Myop. You should enjoy many, many good miles from it
I had the inferior 02 Adventure with the low flow head, weak front rim, bad engine bearing. Miraculously , I was able to put 7000 hard off road miles on my bike, including two long off road trips in CO. The only thing that ever failed on me, was a punctured oil filter and faulty heated grips. Don't believe that pre 03 Adventures aren't any good.
It is a 05 with 6000 miles I hat buying bikes and a few farkles. I hate buing bikes i havent seen or ridden. When i bought my 950 i had never even touched one till mine showed up on the truck. I havent seen a a640 adventure either. thankyou to everybody who answered this post. I have looked everywhere and i havent seen one windshield installed on a 640 and i started a post about wind protection and nobody answered. any ideas?
I ride an 03 Adventure and find the stock windscreen to give fairly good wind protection..... I never really thought much about how well the 640s screen worked untill I took a 650 V Strom out and found it's windscreen directing the flow right into the front of my helmet....
The 05's have the high flow head, but the same problems. HOWEVER, MY friends 05 has taken him about everywhere. He rode it on a trip from ohio to cali and back with no problems what so ever. He has over 20,000 miles on it now. And its ridden very hard. Its had a few problems, but most bikes would under the same conditions
I learned the hard way never ride downhill on a flodded road, it only gets deeper. i try not to read much into all the bike problems written about on the internet. I have had bikes i thought were stone reliable for years untill i got the internet and read about all the problems. I hope the 640 ktm is as good of engine i think it is. It has been around for awhile so it should be all sorted out.
There are discussions of adding a windshield to the 640ADV. Click here for a thread that's specific to that topic. That discussion includes details of what I did for my bike (reply #39).
