Great job on the preride iphorde.
We prerode a couple of months back as far as Loreto, but that was without support and we ran into some wheel bearing issues so we had to head back. We're going to do a couple of prerides this summer for the 1k. We will probably roll with a support truck with gear, and then 2 of us on 990Rs, which we will race in the 1k also. We raced the loop the other year but this year is almost twice as long so it's a different animal. You're welcome to join us. We're not quite sure on the dates.

bad news
So, I have not posted much lately... this year has turned into a nightmare year. I thought this year was the year, but jesus christ, wait until you hear whats happened.
So, back in April one of my teammates that was going to race Baja with me breaks his back while he and I are on moto track. This is bad luck incident number one. Then in on May 7th my wife comes to me and asks for a divorce. The weekend I returned from Baja. She gets mad at me and runs to a hospital and tells them I tried to strangle her, which in NO WAY EVEN REMOTELY HAPPENED. Lucky for me she went to the hospital because there is no sign of any injury. Another break, I have the argument recorded. :) So, I spent the night in jail, because Texas a frickin stupid family violence law, even if there is no evidence, someone goes to jail. She then gets a MAG order and a restraining order put against me where I can't even go to my house. She files for divorce on May 11th and then on May 12th (MY BIRTHDAY) has the divorce papers delivered to me. I get a drug test done on her and she has a laundry list of stuff in her system. Court then dismisses the felony charge. I have spent the entire summer getting my life back and battling to keep my kids. After this is said and done I then am riding my 690 down the garage (I'm in an apartment for the time being) to go to RMAR when a girl cuts the corner and I have to put the bike into the wall and I break my ankle, my foot in 3 places and 2 toes. This is just some of the highlights. So, Baja is off this year unfortunately. But there is next year. I'm trying to figure out if I could even make this year, but with everything going on, I just don't see how. What a cluster fuck of a summer. |

Bummer. Hope you get the family stuff sorted - that's more important than the race, esp the kids.
Maybe plan to do V2R next year as a warm-up. I just did it as my first desert race and it was totally awesome. I think probably a whole lot like baja, but way easier logistically. Easy enough that with a lot of help from a lot of fantastic people (like the Bajabound crew ) I was able to pull off a successful race at the last minute with essentially no prep or training. I got to witness Bajabound's race support program (I wasn't racing with them - I was way too late and broke for that, but got to meet them, watch and learn). Their program is truly top notch, you won't get better treatment anywhere, even on a factory team. The guys are fun, fast, professional and just all around cool. So all this to say, don't sweat the logistics, just get your body in shape, fly in for whatever race fits you schedule and budget and let bajabound take care of the rest. That's how I plan to do the Baja 1k sooner or later ;)

Score website sucks!!!
Is it me or does the SCORE website suck?
I was just there trying to get at the info regarding the route. I'm new to the whole Baja experience having only really paid attention to it last year for the first time. So last year was a loop and this year is a point to point. I get that and I know the many reasons why a race organizer might do this. What I'm not understanding is how a race that was <700 miles last year is now looking like 1200 miles in length for 2010? Am I mis-reading something? Didn't some of the posters here claim an extended race length with solo times going from ~24 hours to up to 40 hours? I was just trying to see the race route to confirm this, but I couldn't find anything on the SCORE site. which brings me back to my original question. Is it me, or does the SCORE website suck?

The SCORE site has most info, you just gotta seearch. They won't post a map until about a month prior to the event.
If you think it sucks now you shouldda seen it a couple years ago. It's perfect compared to how it used to be. You can find a bunch of old maps here - http://rlhcomm.com/BFG/RACES/archives.htm Yes B1k miles vary from 650-1300. Trying to make it 1000mi from Ensenada to La Paz would be difficult and the route would be basically a straight line. When it's about 1015 that's pretty much the most straight fast course they can build. Trying to make it 1000mi northern loop would also be difficult and the north is so torn up and over raced it would be absolutely brutal. IMO it would be easier to solo 1150 to La Paz than it would be to solo some of the 700mi crap courses. bajaboundmoto screwed with this post 09-07-2010 at 09:00 AM |

Thanks for the link to the older maps and the context you provided about how the northern loops are torn up and harder to ride than do to la paz. The website I'm talking about is: http://www.score-international.com/ when I go there I can't get any official details about the 1000, or even the 250 for that matter. The only clickable links for more information are to the Primm 300 this weekend. Its pretty hard to search when most things you click on are a dead end. I can't imagine what it was like a few years ago. By comparison 1 single click on the front page of the BITD website gets a wealth of info about V2R. The SCORE guys should take some cues from them. http://www.bitd.com/best-in-the-dese...s-to-reno.html

Most of the time the loop races are well under 1000 miles and the race to La Paz tend to be over 1000. The topography of Baja leaves only a certain number of possible routes to race on and a limited number of ways to get through some areas. Continuing development of Baja makes it more and more difficult to get the old school distances in today's races. Many years ago they even called it the 1000 when it was only 1000 kilometers in length. It is hard to get a full 1000 miles out of the Northern portion of Baja anymore. In the past SCORE even did the 1000 as a two loop event. You will be given 40 hours to finish your race to La Paz before you "time out". I know that this years route in the Loretto region has yet to be determined due to access issues. Sal and crew are going down next week to "finalize" that portion of the course. Race maps aren't "published" until the opening of pre-running, which before La Paz runs is typically 4 weeks before the race. I would rather have SCORE spend their time and money in Baja than developing fancy smancy interweb sites.

So do they alternate loops with the full length race each year or is it just a guess as to what you will be riding. Seems like it would make a huge difference in the logistics.

Yes, peninsula races are way more logistically chalenging than northern loops.
You can kinda guess on every other year the 1k switching from one-way peninsula run to 'loop'. Back before '00 it was one-way peninsula run every 3rd year. Most 'loop' races are super rough because they only utilize the top ~175 miles of Baja and it's way over-raced/ridden. Sometimes they do 'loop' B1k's that go down farther, maybe 1/3 way south, then turn back north. I think these are the best 'loop' method but it's difficult to make happen with limited routes available. They also throw in some goofy stuff like - '83 was a 2 loop course with mandatory overnight stop, '99 was 2 loops and lame because when bikes finished loop 1 they were instantly mixed in with slower cars. 2006-2007 were both peninsula races (La Paz & Cabo finishes), talk about expensive doing both back-to-back... So the back-to-back big expense along with crap economy they ran '08-'09 as northern loops. So last couple years were 'loops' and this year is one-way to La Paz, and the economy isn't fantastic, so you can pretty much bet '11 will be a 'loop'. After that? Wait and see. Confused yet? bajaboundmoto screwed with this post 09-13-2010 at 08:35 AM |
