My '04 Adventure just started smelling like burnt plastic. I looked under my rear fender to see that the lower part of the fender, adjacent to my left pipe is starting to melt. Any suggestions on cause/repair? Thanks! :huh

I'm assuming you have the stock exhaust, it can get hot enough to melt that plastic (especially if they are clogging up). Those cats are lite furnaces (literally).

Is the adhesive heat shield tape still in place on the underside of the numberplate/ " lower part of the fender"? If not you can replace it with some "dynamat" from a local car audio shop. I used it when the heat shielding fell off the lower right tank on my 950, worked like a charm.

You should either gut those stock pipes, or install an aftermarket exhaust, it totally changes the character of the bike (with proper jetting). AND it will eliminate the heat problem. AND it saves weight.

I appreciate the responses. I have aftermarket (KTM) pipes and it runs GREAT (it's one of the fast black ones too). I am replacing the lower "mud flap" and applying the heat shield as recommended. What can i do if the cats are plugged, anything besides replacement$$$$$???

I used "dyna-mat extreme". I picked up a "Dynamat Xtreme Speaker Kit" at my local car audio shop. It's probably cheaper online though.

    2nd kit from the bottom.

Make sure you clean the plastic body panels really well before applying.

If you have aftermarket pipes, no worries, the cats are gone. Suprised you have heat issues still, are you sure this isn't some old undiscovered damage? BTW, the orange ones are faster!:1drink

HMMMM I have seen my headers glow read hot after some serious hoonage, but I agree, there should be no heat issues at the back of the bike with an exhaust.

    The orange ones ARE faster.

They say these bikes cool the cylinders with fuel evaporation. Could it be lean mixture causes too much heat?
