2014 Roaming Rally and Canadian Rally Challenge

Once again www.GravelTravel.ca is going to host the Roaming Rally. 2014 will mark the fourth year this event has taken place. Each year we try to improve the rally based on lessons learned from previous years...so 2014 has some changes.

2014 has three rallies. The traditional Roaming Rally. A more laid back rally focused more on mileage than rough terain, The Explorers Edition of the Roaming Rally. The third rally is The Canadian Rally Challenge. The CRC is a roadbook navigational challenge, the first of its kind in Canada.

How many to a team for the Roaming Rally?

Ya missed last years roaming rally and should be in for this one (wife please) but going to need a road book holder also.

Can a well-seasoned team of maniacs on 950/990s enjoy the abuse that the 5-day Challenge might give us? Or is it an absolute suicide adventure for these big pigs? Our big Dirtbikes might be bored (other than scenery) with the main Roaming Rally's routes if they've been softened to better serve the (sane) masses on "Adventure Touring" bikes.

Roaming Rally won't be boring...just last year's got to be a bit too much for larger bikes (3 feet deep mud, etc). RR is a do it yourself adventure, we provide a suggested route and if you decide to follow it we'll see ya at the next campground. After check in teams are on their own, no sweep, not much organization...no guarantees no money back kinda thing

CRC will be full on organized and a competition...the cost will reflect this unfortunately. 9x0's.....in the right hands...yes. will there be a few wtf spits along the way? Absolutely. Doable? Probably...Are you the type of guys who ride your 9x0's where others ride dirt bikes?

I looked at some of the videos of previous years. Looks a bit big/deep for some of the big block ADV bikes. Still interested though.

The Rally event sounds very interested Ted - and seriously ambitious!

Really looking forward to participating in both of these, the 450 for the Rally event, and a big bike for the RR, assuming I can salvage my buddy's cased F800GS from last year!

PS - dates sooner rather than later would be great if at all possible - unfortunately I find myself in the situation of having to plan almost a year in advance for most things. Blech.

Edit: Especially now that my 2013 F800GS has become a 1988 R100GS. ;~)

Such a cool bike Andrew. Did you actually get rid of your F800GS, or is this a "second" GS?

A piece of advice from me - don't sell those plastic side cases. I tried two different brands of metal cases on my 89 R100GS and didn't like anything as much as the OEM BMW ones. They are lightweight, pretty rugged, easy on-off. I ended up re-purchasing a set after I sold my original ones. Metal ones might be nice for a big trip but I'd hang on to those nice plastic ones IMHO.
