Yesterday evening went out to restaurant(friends owned). she still haven't seen my bike. well , we come outside and she is "wow , that bitch is tall, blah, blah, blah. I want to hear her sound" so i put the key into the egnition lock wait for the sequence and nothing! EWS! and the yellow triangle come on screen. - FUCK!!! i pulled the key off the ring, since it together with the seat key(it's HP2). tried again - nothing. so i pulled the bike into the restaurant, and left it there for the night, took her SV650 and came home. I'm going to try today the secong plastick key, and i pray and hope that it's gonna work. FUCK! i hope it's not a ring on the egnition , cuz the closest dealer is 120mi from me. Any of you experienced same problem in the past? any suggestions? Thanks a lot!
EWS is german acronym for the security encoded key and transponder. Do you have a factory alarm on it? That could be the culprit. If you don't have a factory alarm, people who have reported this problem before ended finding that the transponder ring around the hey hole needed to be replaced. Some dealers were clueless and spent much time looking for other things.. and in the end it came back to the ring around the key hole which "challenges" the key for the correct chip code to permit startup. Let us know what you end up finding out...
If the bike dudn't start with the plastic key and you're still getting the EWS, call them for roadside assitance and pickup of the bike. I don't know if this will help, but maybe if you disconnect the battery for half an hour and reconnect it and see if this helps...
i know that part, and i hope it's a key. no, it's GS HP2, doen't have any alarms. i didn't put any. i'm afraid that's the issue(the fucking ring)
i will try the plastick key today, i hope it works! yes i have the roadside card i will call them. i don't like the idea of my bike being a $20K statue in a Russian restaurant.
The EWS message pins it to the immobilizer system. It could be the key, the ring antenna or the BMS unit, but the antenna is most likely. In a way that would be better for you (you wouldn't lose one off the ten possible key IDs) but it would sure be easier for you to just fire it up with the plastic key... Heck, maybe it's a bad connection at the antenna connector.
OK, just came back from the restaurant.... FUCK, it was not the key! i tried the second key and nothing.... disconected the battery waited for 10 min , connected back and nothing. i guess on tuesday i'm going to call roadside assistance and let them take the bike to the nearest dealer - 120mi .
is that something i can easily check? where is that POS???? is it an easy access, or half bike has to be taken apart? thanks!
Couple suggestions Have you checked the battery connections? Try jump starting it, I have used a car that IS NOT running when mine would not start; turned out the new software fixed that issue. Also, check the wires that plug into the underside of the ingnition, I had this problem and that is what the tech told me after I had it hauled in. He said it clicked in place. Have you done any work to the bike lately? GPS, Lights or etc? If so check the area you were working; something may have gotten disconnected. BMW will send someone to get it but being that far away they may not cover 100% of the towing fee and I doubt they are going to bring it back to you. Rodney
battary connectors are tight, but i didn't try to jump start it. i didn't do it, but i swing there tomorrow and check it out. nope, bone stock. i know.... thanks
Sorry, but I don't have an HP2 here to check! But you should be able to follow the wires pretty easily. The ring antenna is under the ignition lock. So the problem is in: - ring antenna or cable - antenna connector plug (where it plugs into main wiring harness) - main wiring harness - connector to BMS-K - BMS-K Most likely the antenna. Some have gone bad on other bikes.
as far as i understand the ring antene is the black plastick ring around the ignition slut. i will try to look for what ever is under that and see if i can see something loose. the main thing that scaries me now what hapenneds if shit like that hapenneds in the middle of nowhere. and BTW middle of nowhere are my favorite places to ride. another thing that is kinda stupid, they charge $20K for bike that has nothing, besides being a pure bike, so what the fuck they put that shit on it.
I'm sure you aren't doing this..but if you have two keys on the same ring or another key anywhere near the ignition..it will not start and show an EWS error..it (computer) gets confused and wont' start.
Could do without the JM vibe, but can't disagree in the least with the point you're making. It's electrobloat run amok, and I'd be pissed, too.
When you typically park your $20K HP2, are you not put at ease knowing that this security feature is very effective? Asking how to defeat it is like asking how to steal it. To answer your question about being in the middle of now-where and having this problem.... buy a second ring and keys... learn how to swap it out. Or did I just tell somebody how to steal your bike? Have you tried getting a spare key from BMW lately? They want DNA samples and your first-born. :eek1 I can only imagine what they would require in order to procure a second ring complete with keys. I wonder if they can order one that matches your current code... When you find out, please let us know. This is not common, but I think it has happened to a few machines since the R 1200 GS / HP2 / ADV came out.
