Hey fellow 950 riders, just picked up a 04' 950 adv with 33k, just a few questions, first i'm 5'6" on a good day so the bike is to say the least tall, i bought a corbin low profile seat, (has anyone tried the OEM low seat?)i rermoved the bar risers, (anybody need a set?) had a extra lugged sole installed on my Sidi's, no kidding, i'm determined to make this bike fit,,, right now i'm almost tipy toed when straddling the bike, my next move is the suspension lowering kit for the forks and rear spring, my wife and i want to ride and camp,, any other safe mods for the little people,,, oh by the way, mine stalls when stoping for a light or stop sign, idle seems ok? help!!!! thanks, Joel
I can't really help with the lowering, but if you blip the throttle from idle, does it die? That would typically be indicative of a rich mixture, which you can fix by tightening the mixture screws a small amount. If it pops a lot on overrun coasting in gear, it's too lean.
I have the factory low gel seat, and like it fine. I have heard complaints that it is hard when cold, it gets too hot in the sun, it is uncomfortable for long rides. I have not noticed any of these things. Maybe I have a defective posterior? The boots are a good idea, I have similar. The combination of the boots and the lower seat has brought me about 1" or 1 1/2" closer to the ground. I have a 31" inseam; the bike has 9" suspension, and I can just flatfoot it on level ground. This should not happen. What gearheadE30 said is good to try. If that doesn't cure it, keep looking, because something is certainly wrong.
I'm 5'7" around 160lbs and I went with a softer rear spring that was also a tad shorter and 0.64 front springs that are a tad shorter. Overall the bike sits about .75" lower. The biggest change was how well the bike rides having the softer rear spring. Work was performed by a local suspension guy. Bike handles washboards so much better now. I have a 32" inseam and I can now back the bike up out on the trail without having to jump off every time. I really hated to make these mods to such an awesome bike but after a summer of riding I'm glad I did.
I'm a shorty ( 28 '' inseam ) currently have the low gel seat but I had the hard gel removed and softer foam inserted - much better . Fitted lighter rear spring so it's has a little more sag .
Can you still get a lighter spring for a 2004? All I've seen is for 2005.5 and later, which is a shorter shock.
You can easily lower an inch or so by having the shock shortened and just raising the forks in the clamps. Rear spring should be fine as to length. Just back the pre load adjuster off to accomodate the shorter shock. Set preload as always. Front springs don't have top for length.be changed. I have performed these mods successfully on many dirt bikes and 950 SM.
I bought an 04 from a short guy. I am short as well (5"6"). The bike when I bought it has WP shorter front fork springs and a shorter rear spring. I'm sorry I don't have more details for you than that but that combined with a logger style boot has been great. Good luck
Be cautious about this, and do some measuring. I don't think you will have a lot of room before hitting the bottom triple clamp on a G-out. I would be interested to hear the opinion of someone who actually knows through experience- I am just guessing.
Yes , I got mine from this Co http://www.eibach.com.au/ Or Talk to http://www.superplushsuspension.com/
I have a 06 that I put the oem tall suspension on( bought the kit) have all the parts to put in your bike to lower it for a deal.the suspension had about 3000 miles on it so still new but you'll want to go to heavier springs up front when two up alot
To make it shorter you have two options: Your bike is one of the tallest, you can swap with any Adventure from 2005.5 and later to get about a 1 1/2" shorter bike. Easy swap, must include the center and side stands. Takes about 2 hours. Advertise on the forum and you should find someone. Your bike probably needs the suspension rebuilt, fresh oil, new fork seals and all the debris cleaned out. You would like stiffer fork springs too, as the stockers are soft. To shorten the bike, it's only a little more labor to install spacers, get a shorter rear spring and cut the side stand. Most suspension shops have done this.
Does he have the tall suspension? Mine does, but it is the earliest of the '04s, the silver one. I thought the later '04s had the lower suspension.
The first thing you should do is make sure the rear and front has minimum preload. The difference between high and low at the rear is 30mm. Preload only effects ride height, and not stiffness or hardness.
As others have mentioned, your 2004 std is taller than later models standard height, at 230mm of stroke. The later bikes have 210. We lower adventures on a regular basis without much difficulty. Combined with more appropriate springs and valving, the bike becomes a delight. Check us out for advice or work. Cheers James
