Here is my revised route for today's travels, routing around the forest fires. Basically it's highway 380 to Roswell, NM, then 285 to Ft. Stockton, TX. I got a late start due to spending an hour on the phone with Verizon Wireless after learning that nobody was able to call my cell phone. Turns out it was a Verizon network problem in the Socorro area.

The ride to Roswell was quite pretty. Here are some pics taken in flight:








These guys were holding up traffic near Lincoln.


Lincoln seems to be of historical interest, home to the Lincoln State Monument.

The Southbound leg on 285 was flat and dull by comparison:



I scored the last street-level room in the Motel 6 in Ft. Stockton.



Then dinner at the steak house across the street. New York strip, baked potato, green beans, apple cobbler. Yum. Sorry no pics!

Great pics Rod!! We have a home right off 108 and have ridden over the pass many times! Beautiful ride! Enjoy your trip....I'll be watching for more pics!

Great report, your pictures of and near Jerome are nearly identical to the ones I shot not a month ago. 89A is one of the most amazing stretches of road I've ever experienced on a motorcycle.

Hey Rodr, I rode south on 395 from Reno to the LA area on April 11th. There was still alot of snow in those mountains. All three passes were closed at that time. I came back through on April 22nd and it seemed to still be alot of snow around. I grew up in Sonora and spent time much time in the mountains from Twain Harte to the Sonora pass area. Did alot of fishing and backpacking there.

Today's leg will take me from Ft. Stockton down to Del Rio near the Mexico border, and then through some of the Texas hill country to Kerrville. Click here for the route map. These places are scheduled to be hot, 95 degrees and up, so I get an early start to do as much of the ride as possible in cooler temperatures.



The initial ride out of Ft. Stockton starts straight and flat.



But after a while it starts looking better.







Refueling in Sanderson:



Sanderson is a curious little town.







Continuing on US 90.





Texas seems to have a lot of historical markers like this:

It's an all-you-can-eat buffet with mostly locals.

One of the locals in the restaurant told me that Camp Wood is on the Western edge of the hill country. So now I'm officially in it.

Finally in Kerrville, I score a great deal on a room and get permission to park the Wee in front of it.

GREAT RR.... I live in TX, and you GOTTA be HOT down there... ! I'm reading your report, and being that Ive ridden all those roads in the summer, and knowing the feeling of your skin melting off your body!!!

Day 7 is indeed the hottest day of the trip so far. The route is mostly an exercise in avoiding I-10 and so consists of a generally Eastbound selection of country roads.

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.













Lunch was in La Grange, about two hours out of Houston, at a crowded (always a good sign) roadside restaurant. The day's special was chicken fried steak. Never had that before and decided to give it a try. I still don't know what kind of meat it is.








Antique selling seems to be really big in this area.


Just before 290 turns into a freeway I stop at a DQ to cool off with some ice cream.


Getting closer to Houston, the temperature is up to about 103 now.


Which, in bumper-to-bumper traffic is not much fun!


Finally at Beth's house I am rewarded with a local brew.

No riding tomorrow, it will be a day of visiting and playing.
