My riding buddy (a member here but I don't know his nick) went down this past Thursday evening while riding his 1989 Transalp. He was on one of our local express ways (like an interstate but not numbered) when a pickup in front of him lost a mattress out of the bed. It was just after dark and when he saw it in the roadway he braked hard and tried to swerve to miss it but clipped a corner. He says he was down to about 30mph at the point he hit it but the bike went airborne and slammed down on his right leg, breaking the top of his tibia off and powdering the growth plate. He went to surgery the next day and the ortho doc tried to fix it with a plate, a bunch of screws and wires. The doc says it was one of the worst breaks he has seen in his practice. He is home as of today and resting. Only time will tell if it will heal. The state police have cited the driver of the truck with an improperly secured load resulting in an accident with injury and for not having insurance. Please have him in your thoughts...
Sorry to hear. God Bless. I crashed last week. Broke 3 metatarsals in my foot, disco toe and fractured clavicle. I'm also at home resting with new internal jewellery. I'll heal, the achy leg/foot does make it hard to sleep. Tell your friend that a crazy Canuck sends his regards. Heal well.
Sympathy for your friend, and I hope he heals up well. I broke my leg last December though it probably wasn't as bad as your friend's break. I found this site to be useful and informative, and it's a way to spend some time as you sit around the house, not weight-bearing! http://www.mybrokenleg.com/
I just wanted to add that after 4 months I'm back on the bike and have fixed the transalp back to her former glory.thank for the well wishes all. Most of the fractures are healed up and the where the tibia got pretty much turned to powder at the plateau its filling the bone back in slowly but surely. Be safe all and watch out for ambushing mattresses on the interstates! Final count on hardware was 2 large plates and 12 screws. On the upshot I now have built in knee armor on the right side! Dale
