What are the best straps to tie your bike down while trailering?

NOT the cheesy ratchet straps you get at auto parts stores.

Go to a moto store and get the ones that have a loop at the buckle end for putting around handlebars, and pull them tight, then knot the slack end so they can't loosen.

The ones I use I went to my local bike shop and asked if I could have some that come off bikes that are delivered. They're blue. They work perfectly. They were free.

Ratchet ones are most secure because they are less likely to slip. Just be smart about how tight you crank them.

Protip: If they have hooks that don't clip put a piece of duct tape around the hook so it can't pop off if you hit a bump. I witnessed ONE tie down pop off from a trailered bike. It friggin cartwheeled a couple times before the other strap let go. Not my bike and not my trailer but it was ugly.

I get the part about more than just hooks at the point of connection. I'm new to trailering bikes and have had the hook ends fall off.

How much should I compress the bike suspension?

My favorites are the Keepers. So much so that I use them exclusively for my own bikes. I've sold hundreds of these and folks always come back. They are the only non-tool product I sell - I believe in them that much.

KTM straps are my favorite. They have a carabiner on the end that goes to the truck/trailer. The other end is a soft strap. If going long distance, I use another carabiner to lock this soft strap in place instead of the provided hook. The webbing is thick and wide, the cam buckle is secure. Big fan.

Being an ex raft guide I'm partial to ancra/NRS straps for lots of other things but motorcycle tie downs is not one of them. One thing I do like the ancra straps for is to secure the back wheel from bouncing to one side. I'll either use two and pull on the rim in either direction or one and do a loop around the tire before going to the other side

+1, if for no other reason than the swivel (which, makes a lot of sense).

Ancra cam straps with built in soft loops for me. Yank it down, slippery half hitch as a back up, and done. I haven't met the ratchet strap that I liked yet; they're just too much of a pain to use, and I'm never happy that they are tight enough until the tire bottoms out.

Am I the only one left on the planet using good ol' fashioned analogue rope? In fifty years of tying shit down I've never had anything come adrift. Good ropes are soft, grippy and 'tunable'.

Excuse the interruption. I see this thread is in the 'Equipment' sub-forum. Please proceed.
