I know this was going on in the early 2000's but has anyone converted a dirt bike to street legal in NC in the past 2 years?? Im specifically wanting to convert a WR450f, the person at the DMV told me it is possible but then when Ive looked at other sites and message boards people are saying its not happening ??? Any help would be appreciated.
Last person to try here was rglee. Dmv inspected bike and he had tag riding it. Two weeks later he got a letter, from state dmv office in Raleigh, telling him to turn in the tag that they would not issue him a title. Ray
What about transferring a title (WR450F) from another state ( TN).... Anyone know for sure if NCDMV will allow the transfer to remain street legal?? How recently has this been done?? Any replies would be appreciated.
Does the title state anywhere on it as off road use? If not then there is a good chance it will transfer. Ray
They have their little database in a book with VIN formatting and models... If it's in the book, it's black listed... There are almost no Euro bikes in that book... AKA, if you want a race bike for the street, get a KTM/Husky/Husaberg/GasGas/... You may be lucky with a Japanese bike, but strong chance they'll notice and deny you... The more expensive method is get a wrecked DS bike and basically use that VIN for the 450f... NC has gotten much more strict about it lately.
I've read of licensing it in another state that's more lenient - Idaho and New Hampshire, I think and then transferring it here. I believe at least one of those allows registration by mail. There are threads on ADV detailing this.
I'm going to attempt it next week. Got an old XR400 that I've turned into a trail bike. Just put some dot tires on it(that was a learning experience). Got the Baja designs lighting kit on it, which I am very pleased with. I'll report back the outcome. Wish me luck! Duane
I did exactly that with my KLX450R. I bought my KLX450R from an inmate here located in Alabama who already had it plated. I purchased the bike and went to one of NC DMV center in Charlotte, transferred the title and they looked it up but didn't seem to pay too much attention since it was already plated in AL. I paid the registration and title transfer fee and picked up my NC plate. I can't remember the exact time period but I was told by DMV to get a safety inspection within 30? days of receiving the plate. I did have to install a Baja DS Kit, LED Lic/Brake Light, One Mirror, Horn. I took it to Matthews Fun Machines and promptly failed because I did not have a front and rear brake light switch active. I had to go back and add hyd. pressure switch on my front and rear brake cylinder. I then passed without any issue and just like any vehicle, once the safety inspection passes, it is transmitted electronically to the DMV. Jon
Well, the words "off highway" on my XR's title are killing me. Tried to get the highway patrol to look the bike over and give me some kind of letter for the DMV. Didn't work. I'm going to try plan B. If that doesn't work I have a plan C in mind. If I didn't like the bike so much I'd sell it and buy something different!
make up a bill of sale..then get the dmv forms for a Bonded Title..it will cost you but your chances of getting it tagged are better. DO NOT MENTION that you have a title! Use the Bill of Sale!
