San Diego to Cabo - March/April 2013

Hello fellow Baja lovers,

We're making a run down to Cabo in April 2013. Basically following with Baja 1000 course with changes to avoid the difficult parts. Who likes 50 miles of whoops? We plan on about 200 miles per day and are doing about 90% off-road. It should take us 5 or 6 days to get to the tip, depending on the route and, like real men, we are riding back as well.

Currently there are three of us that are committed but the more the merrier! I'm cross posting this on another site and am receiving some additional interest. We are doing this on Adventure bikes, 2 KTM 990s and 1 BMW GS. All riders welcome as long as you like tacos and beer and have a good attitude.

I've spent a lot of time in Baja but have never made a trip this far south. I'm already excited and it's 4-5 months away!

No baja trip is complete without a stay in Loreto. The Posada de las Flores hotel is very cool. Good place to sip a few cervezas by the rooftop glass-bottomed pool.

I think I may be in for the ride!

Multiple ways to get from San Ignacio to Insurgentes on many different race routes over the years. Recently they have been going south through San Juanico and then up through La Prisima and then through Loreto and back to the Pacific through San Javier. It's a little rough for the big GS but if the rider can hang in the cobbles and sand it is some of the best stuff in Baja.

This ride is on my list. I have got the bike KTM 990R, I'll open the time and make up with the wife when I get back. Currently I live in the Northwest, but I have brothers in San Diego I can launch from. Tell me, what are the plans?

Just got back from a weekend there. down to Mikes and back.
I ride a F800gs. How are you setting up the route for bigger bikes?
We did a trail called Simsons Ranch that leaves the back way out of mikes and it was very very hard on the 800s, but we did it..little plastic lost in the meantime..

Did you go up through Simpson's from Trinidad or down through Simpson's from Mikes?

I want to do this ride but am wary about the big bike issue and the routes. I have an XRL650 and a GS1200. I'm a competent rider and strong . Is the 650 more suitable?

any tips u can pass or maps of "hidden" trails to enjoy? i want to bring my bodyboard to hit the waves in san juanico and my others!!

The route we are doing would be fine on either. So far, the only committed riders are on KTM 990s. You might be able to keep up on your GS

We are limiting the amount slab to a minimum so it's really up to you. We do have one leg that is about 160 miles between fuel stops.

They came down from Mikes. They were following a past 1000 winner riding a Crf450x heh heh.

X2 on Cabo Pumo. Just South of Los Barriles on the coast road (mostly dirt) to Cabo from La Paz. There is an awesome taco stand on one of the best beaches in Baja there. There are corral reefs a half mile off shore to dive - you can rent all the dive gear and pangas right there in the little fishing village of about 100 residents, too deep to snorkel (40').

Do you have the route mapped out yet, or will there be some "adjustments" on the road?
If I can get my wife to sign off on it I'll have to haul ass back from Cabo. 2 weeks will cost me lots of guilt!

Adjustment are always necessary! Yes, the route has been mapped out. I figure it will take 5-6 days to get to Cabo. I don't plan on being gone the entire 2 weeks.

If you need to get back in a hurry, you can slab it I suppose.

The trip is coming together nicely. One member of our group is playing a gig in Ensenada on 4/20 so that's where we will be ending the trip. Should be a great way to top of an epic ride!

Hope one of you guys can make our 1,200 mile beer run!
