Did you ever determine if your bike was a '77 (it has the '77-only paint) or a '78? I have a '77 with Lesters and luggage as well so I'm following your thread closely.

I believe I did, but for the life of me I am drawing a blank right now. I believe it was a 78. I have the serial number off the bike.

6161000r100s

I believe the wheels on mine WERE changed and are not factory. I also believe the PO had changed the fairing too. Not sure what other modifications may have been done. I'm still trying to learn what did and did not come on these bikes.

Your wheels are Lester Mags, a popular period accessory for the mid-70s. Your bike, as seen here: http://bmbikes.co.uk/chassispages/enginechassis1000.htm, was made in 2/77. Keep in mind that '77 was a very slow model year according to some sources and almost all "78s were made in 1977.

Great factory photos, magazine articles and inspiration can be found here: http://www.omnilex.com/public/bmw78/ From this site you can see what did, and did not come stock on the bike. You luggage racks, and Lesters, for instance are in the accessory section. Click on each photo to enlarge and enjoy

Did you verify float levels?

Did you remove the emulsifier for complete cleaning?

Every skipped step can be the devil you seek to destroy.

Fuel levels are spot on, I rechecked those again this year, I haven't given it a full cleaning this year though. It sat dry over the winter and started up so easily I thought I would be in the clear. Though you are right and I have been thinking it. I'll have to go through the carb and clean it to verify it is 100% clear again. It's supposed to rain for the next few days but I'll see what I can do!
