DR650SE Index Topic #14 LUGGAGE & RACKS, ACCESSORIES

Sometimes you need to bring stuff along. There are quite a few luggage racks out there specfically designed for the DR650. The (lamentably discontinued) eBay "BBQ" rack was fitted to so many DR's, some of you probably thought they came that way from Suzuki.
Share what works when it's time to load up. Also, tell us about any other "farkles" you've added...

I have the BBQ rack, does a great job of protecting the turn signals. If I didn't have it I would have lost my rear turn signals long ago. Oh yeah, it also makes a great luggage rack for a duffle bag.

Anyone tried/have the Moose expidition rack ?? They've been on ebay for $129 but I dont know anything about them.

Yep, slapped one on my 09 DR650SE. Went on pretty easy and is just the right size. My Cortech tail bag fits perfectly/exactly on the rack. Rear grab rails remain, and didn't have to relocate the turn signals.

I picked mine up from Procycle as part of a larger order.

Thanx for the input, my bike dont have one at all and I was strapp'n my lunch box to the grab bars, it worked ok but I'm gonna get a good rack, wouldnt mind find'n on of the BBQ racks for sale.

bbq rack for me. i'm amazed someone hasn't copied it yet.
it really is one of the best ever designs.
i use a dry duffel on the rear

giantloop coyote bag sits on the rear of the seat perfectly ahead of the rack. i have all the storage i need and no racks left over when i'm done.

I seen some pics of a set someone made from old milatary ammo cans with the lids that had the big latch on the end, I'm think'n good idea. (but not for long)

Just outta curiosity I looked at a set of them at a army surplus store, man are they heavy, dont know what a set of "store bought" aluminum side cases would weigh but surely they aint as heavy as the ammo boxes.

Not sure how much they weigh, but surplus Mermite cans have been converted into panniers...

For $307.00, a pair of these might be lighter and look / work better. You would have to paint the inside so you stuff doesn't turn black from rubbing raw aluminum.

You can get a set of racks from Happy Trails or SW Mototech.

If you have the money the complete Happy Trails setup would be the way I'd go if going hard cases.

I have Wolfman Expedition Dryline soft bags and their DR racks on my bike. Couldn't be happier. Two minutes on, two minutes off and bone dry.

I also have their soft bags: Yukon model 27 L.

The Hard and Soft cases mount on the same racks so I can interchange them as I wish. I used the soft bags through Mexico and the hard ones in Europe and Central Asia. They both work well- they are on the small side so you need to think hard about what you want to carry- no blue jeans or other bulky stuff. I prefer the security of the hard bags for traveling.

About $30. No complaints. I carried a spare tube in each side, plus raingloves, etc. on one side and a liter of water and other small stuff on the other. Still had room to spare. They keep out most water but leak in heavy rain so I pack things in Zip locks if they have to stay dry. I added a grommet hole in the bottom of each side so they would drain.

RACKS

Suzuki stock rack with old, sawed-up cross country ski bolted on as a spare tire rack. Strong with a little flex in it.




-TOOL CARRIERS

Welding rod tube mounted exactly the way Greer showed here on her bike, except I doubled up on strapping and hose clamps (under the bicycle innertube padding). Holds a lot, and has been solid for 30,000 miles of hard use.

I have a Borrego rack from turbo city and am very happy with it.

that's one of the better larger ones in production these days.
i think they are made for moose also as it looks the same.

ms paniers makes side racks for the dr and 1500/1520 pelicans bolt up nicely to them (fat chance put this mod together) or you can get their hard or softbags

I also wondered if they made the them for moose! it's one sturdy sob.

I have a Suzuki rack on my '97 DR650.
It was an accessory from Suzuki.
I don't know if they still have it.
I have seen some of the racks from Turbo City, they look good but I won't change unless I really feel the need.
