I'm trying not to sound like a ponce here, and I'm going to be shot down in flames.

But I think this forum could be improved if there was a bit more grace and etiquette.

Even though there are rules against no personal attacks and the general stuff regarding pub and shed behaviour - (usefull guidelines) there are blurry edges that I believe new chums need to consider.

I'm no saint, but firstly a definition of grace

Grace - a disposition to be generous or helpful - goodwill.

Etiquette - rules of etiquette encompass most aspects of social interaction in any society, though the term itself is not commonly used. A rule of etiquette may reflect an underlying code. Rules of etiquette are usually unwritten. Here's my go at writing some of them.

Things like politeness, in particular politeness to people you have never met. Give them the benefit of the doubt. If you have met and know each other then it's open slather (largely).

Proding and poking is OK but keep it on topic.

Don't judge other inmates until you have met them - try to keep an open mind. It's easy to wrongly interpret folk - I've done this on a number of occasions.

If they are irritating just put them on ignore for a while.

Don't sift through other peoples posts and re-quote them out of context (unless you know them in real space and you can share a joke).

Dont bully or gang up - baggings OK if you know them - but not nasty stuff.

Don't post other peoples photos or nick them from their hosting sites until the owners post them - then its open slather -Try and be generous and cite the source.

    Avoid cliques.

Don't pull things from an inmates CP and air them publicly - people who I have never met have done this to me and to quote a famous Qlder - I don't like it.

Do try and be helpful. If you can't be helpful - try and be funny (I've got this one wrong on many occasions).

Don't try and own a thread that you have an investment in - ones you have started etc - take a deep breath - let it go and let it morph.

I don't want to make any RULES just trying to improve things.

I have a very simple philosophy I try to follow, never say (type) something on the forum you wouldn't say face to face, easy as that,

ok, so where does your 're bore' fit into that etiquette list.

what you say is fine and good and obviously well considered (so... did you really write it :scratch ) so i invite you to lead by example. :evil

guess i should know what a cp is but please iluminate me?

    moving on - generically:

if we need to define a set of rules like this then perhaps we have lost the plot or perhaps we are attempting to shape something to our own expectations.

the net is a relatively new form of communication, the endless creation of ways to communicate online (youtube, twitter etc) suggest to me that the whole etiquette issue is far from resolved.

remember it ws only yesterday when we had party lines and the main form of communication was a letter some days old upon receipt. and remember the fuss people made when faxes hit the market and how they could communicate cheaper by faxing a letter to someone instead of mailing it.

however, if you feel the need to tell a person how to behave then you need to revisit your thinking for each of us is behaving in a way that seems rational to ourselves, if you cannot cross the bridge and accept their proffering then i contend it is indeed not them with the problem but you.

simply if you want to improve somebody don't do it by exerting authority.

i didn't read a sign above the door when i entered that said you will be a well behaved, cultured, camera wielding bike fanatic who can only post on subjects purely related to bikes.

however, since i've been here I've been criticised for each of those points - that i don't ride a bike, that i don't take photos and share them, that i dare post something not related to the holy grail.

so, maybe we need to change the sign on the door... i saw a sign that says if you are interested in bikes and the people who ride them then welcome :thumb

ffs we dont want to be a bunch of sheep now do we - it'd only encourage too many kiwis.

ah, which brings me to another thought - the forum has never been the same since we lost the kiwis with whom we could rage a good peaceful war, now we've lost our common enemy it has become sport to bicker internally...

and bring back oldozy. it is simply disgraceful the way this place has treated him and i've yet to see a bloody scrap of stuff that would lead me to conclude anything but that he is a very valid contributor with a lot to offer the place.

if you want to ban someone permanently then do it for valid reasons and not cause you couldn't be bothered to engage the fellow and answer him with courtesy.
