13th Rick's Eastern Rendezvous May 15-18, 2014 Hampton, TN at the Black Bear Resort Please do not call the resort for reservations. last years thread last years picture thread What's it all about? Imagine 175+ ADV folks in the Mountains of Eastern TN for a long weekend, with some of the best riding in the east (dirt, gravel, twisties).... plus great company, a private resort (plenty of space indoors in case of rain), campfire, 3 great dinners and breakfasts, plenty of beer, and some bullshitting. What can go wrong? Some random pics from last year: here - and here Whatcha get:Dinner on Thursday, Breakfast and Dinner on Friday, Breakfast and Dinner on Saturday, Breakfast on Sunday, about 18 kegs of beer and root-beer a t-shirt, a mug and a sticker, door-prizes and a huge indoor area and covered decks (in case of rain) RDV fee $75 let us know if you plan to arrive on Wednesday! History: The Eastern Rendezvous is the oldest annual ADV rally, and the only one in the south east. It started in 2002 as a small traveling gathering, and Rick aka Party Boss turned it into an annual event known as the Eastern Rendezvous. Sadly we lost Rick in 2012. Nobody will ever be able to be such a great and inviting host like he was, but we will keep his rally alive in honor of what he started. One for the Boss <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/c8Z5fMfBrNM" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="420"></iframe> video made by Boondoggle! Camping: </form><form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post" target="_top"> This includes tents, hammocks, benches, chairs in front of the fire... basically if you spend the night and do not pay for a cabin, you gotta pay $23 for camping. We do have very limited parking for your rig next to the resort and can not guarantee a parking spot, also you will not be able to spend the night in your trailer. Keyword: limited - if we are out of parking space, you may need to park at the AT-trailhead and carpool to the resort, or pay the neighbor for the use of his yard. </form>Creekside Cabins - SOLD OUT Shared Bunk-cabins for 4 people. Saturday AM geared for 2-ups, old farts, hung-overs and anyone looking for a little less brisk pace. Ideal for larger dual sports. Meet 9:45ish at the camp store for pre-ride meeting and let's roll by 10:00. Standard ride rules apply. Expect simple gravel and some fun pavements and current plan is to include the "Snake" and other fun stuff in the area. Bring a sammich and snacks or you can purchase grub at the lunch stop. Frequent photo and pee ops. Learn advanced Adventure Rider skills and techniques such as barn and shack hunting, moon pie eatin', lie swappin', and hound dog petting. We should be back by 4ish if'n we don't get lost. Under Construction ( maybe Friday too or a modified version if enough interest)
Should we do this again? <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/_ZncehIh_Kw" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="420"></iframe> I've actually come up with a firm plan for the late train aka hangover rides this year. We'll leave from Black Bear no earlier than 10:30ish, we'll ride a bit of dirty gravel then some twisty pavement with maybe another stretch or two of dirty gravel then stop and eat some lunch, after that we'll ride back towards camp on a mix of twisty pavement with a few more stretches of dirty gravel. Standard rules will apply. Volunteers for relay riders accepted. Tentative routes: Thursday: Lunch @ Hawg-n-Dawg via Beauty Spot TO FROM Friday: Lunch @ Sharpie's TO FROM Saturday: Lunch @ Dry Run & Watauga Lake Winery TO FROM *note maps are color coded showing pavement in blue and dirt/gravel in red.
Big bike friendly Dual sport ride! (Three states and a Dam) Fri. and Sat. (might lead a Thursday ride if enough interest) -Departure-09:00 near the camp store! -Very twisty ride, pavement and gravel! -Not planning a sit down lunch. -Perfect for motards -Pace will be relaxing, may even stop for some pic's. - 2-up riders are welcome! "Standard rules apply"(KTM Mikes rules) 1.Please show up to your ride with a full gastank. 2. Please show up to your ride at least ten minutes before departure time. 3. In order to avoid delays during the ride: a. No passing others in the group regardless of whether they are moving or standing still. If the rider in front of you stops, YOU STOP WITH HIM. That means that everyone behind you will stop too! (Suppose the rider in front of you slows down because his bike is breaking down or because he has a flat tire. If you continue past him, the leaders see you coming and procede further and further from the problem. Confusion like this makes for a long day). If everyone stops, the leaders will return shortly. b. If you want to swap places in line, please do so during a stop. c. If you want to split early/mid-ride, stop and tell the sweep what you are doing so we don't spend time looking for you (and make sure you have the maps to find your way back to camp). 4. Ride at your own pace: you don't have to try to catch up to riders in front of you. Continue straight ahead. Someone will be waiting for you at the next left or right turn. 5. Safety: Please leave plenty of room between yourself and the rider in front of you. When he has to slam on his brakes, he doesn't need you crashing into the back of him and ruining EVERYONE's day. Also, there is nothing worse than having to change the way you ride all day because of what's going on in your mirror. If a rider keeps getting too close behind you, flash your brake lights repeatedly as a reminder to BACK OFF. 6. Tire repair: a. All riders with tubed tires should carry a spare tube the size of their largest diameter tubed tire, (NOT just a tube patch kit, which takes longer). b. All riders with tubeless tires should carry a plug kit. c. Bring tire-pump if you've got one. 7. Cash: Carry cash for gas please. Rural gas stations often do NOT take credit/debit cards. 8. No whining.
Friday-Dirt Ride 10 a.m. start Dirt, rock, mud, steep hills. Small bikes with fresh tires. We'll ride as little pavement as possible to reach the trails. Will make a gas & snack stop on the way. We'll be on the trails until about 4 p.m., so bring plenty of water & snacks. (Will bypass last year's boulder-field climb, or descend through it instead.) Saturday ~ Small Dual Sport Ride (I'll lead on a Yamaha XT225) 10 a.m. start This ride will be mostly very twisty paved backroads, 10-20% gravel, and a few washed out jeep trails to connect some spots. This will be a dream route for Motards, but we'll be keeping the speeds safe (and "mostly" legal). The route will wind somewhere between Camp Central ~ the Black Bear, Mtn. City & Banner Elk, & Beech Mtn., tying some of my favorite twisty spots together. We will include a lunch stop and maybe a short coffee & pie stop. Bring the Go Pros & cameras, there will be some great views & plenty of riding action to shoot. Of course bigger bikes are welcome, but my "agenda" will be to make you wish you were on a smaller bike. { This is just a "rough draft" for the rides. I'll edit them as I iron out the details. If any of you guys want to come up and help plan the routes just shoot me a PM. } I will probably be posting a list of the roads that I have in mind, so you can try some of them if you happen to be in the area before or after this ride. Also, Doe Mtn. OHV is open, so that will offer good riding for folks wanting check out a bit less extreme trail riding.
Dare You to Follow Kyle? Rides: TWISTED RIDES Friday - Big Bikes, twisty pavement ride with a spirited pace! NO GRAVEL! (Wimpy bikes OK too. We'll wait for you to catch up at major turns.) 135 miles and about 4 hours. (Short day) I'm thinking it will be early enough to hit a lunch stop then back to camp. Or more miles? Saturday - Big Bikes trail ride. We'll try to make it challenging, but will help pick up bikes where needed. It's all about FUN! (May even stop for some prime photo ops.) 9AM departures both days! Meet in front of the tent camping area! Don't panic if breakfast runs late...We'll wait if that's the case.
THURSDAY TUNE-UP RIDE At Buffalo Mountain ATV Trail Scout ride report here. Not to early, let's leave at 10:00. We can stop in Erwin an top off with gas and get snacks. Bring plenty of water, lunch etc. There is nothing out there. This is a 13 mile out an back trail so even I shouldn't get lost. More info here, and here.
Friday and Saturday, departing at 0930hrs, meet at the lower parking area by the cabins - Big, Medium, and Small bike friendly This ride will be All ADV Bike Friendly (I'll likely be on an 1150GS or KLR6??), with paved twisty stuff, various grades of gravel and plenty of scenery. This ride will be very similar to Todd's (ADVTenn) above, but we will travel at a bit less of a spirited pace. This will be the perfect ride for those looking to get some gravel and twisty roads in and travel at a moderate pace. I welcome newbies and veteran riders alike. Tires should be capable of handling in gravel and pavement, but there shouldn't be any mud or ruts on this ride, so knobbies aren't necessary. "Standard rules apply"(KTM Mikes rules) 1.Please show up to your ride with a full gastank. 2. Please show up to your ride at least ten minutes before departure time. 3. Brought to you by the Moran Nation! We intend to boldly go where we haven't before! The goal is to see cool shit, old stuff and take a few pictures. On Friday and Saturday, this ride will begin promptly when everyone arrives at the Moran Nation Compound. We will leave the campground and turn left which means gas up on the way in. In years past, we were lead astray, away from the scenery and into town so that we can eat at Sonic. This will not be the case this year. Mixed routes with back roads, gravel, maybe a little dirt now that Fe Woman has her mad dirt bike skills. Small stream crossings may pop up if we find one. Big bike friendly, small bike friendly, Heritage Soft-tail classic; not so much. Two up probably not a good idea... This is a female friendly ride meaning there will be women riding. We will find places for big girl sit-downs as required. Lunch will happen, whenever. This is new rider friendly for the most part, just be prepared for gravel. There will be riders of all skill levels so don't wuss out early. We generally travel with a security escort, medical support and legal representation. That's all I got right now. OK, maybe Fe Woman isn't going to make it but it will still be female friendly, probably. And a Public Service Announcement: 1.Please show up to your ride with a full gas tank. 2. Please show up to your ride at least ten minutes before departure time. 3. In order to avoid delays during the ride: a.
